foray
alhamdulillah
the right of the guest and the
host this is part of the rights that we
need to observe we need to learn what
are these rights in our life as part of
the Islamic education we ask Allah
subhana T to make us benefit from what
we
learn having a guest or being a host
these are rights to be observed and we
have verses in the Quran that talks
about it andth of the
Prophet something that is part of life
part of the relationships that people
have and the generosity that we are
commanded to observe great rewards from
Allah subhana tala and it's sufficient
for us that the prophet said in the
authentic Hadith reported by IM
Muslim where the prophet he
said and whoever believes in Allah in
the last day so let him be kind to his
guest and the word to be generous with
your guest and there are details to this
by the way and there is a mandatory
portion of it the mandatory part of
generosity is when you have a traveler
that comes to you specifically and he's
not from those who are in the town that
you're in uh so this is a mandatory
kindness and generosity that has to be
observed so and this is such a an
important right of course uh one of
which is when you have a guest one of
the rights of the guest is that you show
that you're happy when you're welcoming
your guest you know the prophet is the
example for
us when the delegation fromd came to the
prophet and he said who are the people
they said so he
said welcome to the
people it's a statement that that shows
that you're not going to be regretful
that you're not going to be let down
welcoming them saying all kinds of words
that would make them comfortable and
make them pleased so you
know and this is something that you
would see you know in the Sunnah of the
prophet and and how when some visited
the prophet and he
said no one has more honored than me
than to have these great uh guests that
I have so to be generous with them to to
welcome them to make them feel uh
welcomed and and being pleased and to be
generous with them and the story of with
his guests is something that mentioned
so many benefits in it especially the
verses
in and one of which is that they were
that means he honored them he was very
generous with them and the same word is
used in the Hadith of the
Prophet one of the things to be observed
is to serve them yourself the host
should serve his guests himself and to
be kind to them with nice words and to
be in haste to give the food as as soon
as it gets ready with whatever means
that a person has right and this is
something that you know again we learn
from the verses in
about when Allah says
about he went quickly uh in a in a
subtle way that his guests they did not
know what he was doing to his family and
he got a very uh fat calf for them to
eat and he fixed it all of that is you
know to show the kindness towards the
guests uh and that's why you know if say
for example the person uh guests came
all of a sudden and he doesn't have any
food ready for them to to eat to give
them anything that is ready like fruits
or something of that nature you know as
the
prophet when he went to
someone and
uh he did not find any food with him you
know in his place meaning that person so
he went and he brought to
them he got some dates for them and he
put it in front of them and after that
he took this the knife and he
slaughtered the goat and he cooked it so
while the cooking is happening he kept
them also busy
with eating something this is part of
the ethic it's part of the rights to be
observed uh the or what's known to the
people in the locality something that is
okay as long as it's a sign of
generosity not the opposite not that the
norm of the people that are greedy for
example and uh like for example you know
if if if you know that your guest is
from a place where they don't eat a
certain type of food for example you
don't have to fix it don't fix it so
that you would abstain from eating it or
making it difficult for him you know and
this is something that the prophet did
when you put the food you make it close
to them as it's mentioned also
about he made the food near them near
the guest not that you put it far away
from them and you say let's go to the
food and uh to encourage them to eat to
ask them to eat without too much of
being pushy in the matter and at the
same time you know to remove any shyness
that they might have by keep on asking
them to start eating and things of that
nature um one of which also to have the
E to choose your guests over your own
self right not to eat with them as if
you're competing with them but rather to
give them the best to choose them over
yourself because they are your guests
and uh the verse inah that Allah subhana
praised the
companions with the subject of it was
because of an incident of a guest that
the prophet he did not have anything and
he
said who would take this person as a
guest for tonight and a man from the ANS
from Medina he said I would a prophet of
Allah and he went to his wife and he
told her
toam be kind be generous to the guest of
the messenger sallallahu alaihi wasallam
and she said to him we have no food
except the food that is sufficient for
your children so he said you know get
them busy with something and and fix
your food and make yourself as if you're
fixing the light and then uh turn it off
and then you know let the guest eat when
there's no light so that he doesn't see
that there's less food than what should
be and get the kids to be busy by
putting them to sleep and she did that
and uh the she made herself pretended
that she was fixing the the light and it
turned them off so that they were
sitting with the guest and he would be
thinking that they're eating with him
and they were not eating they were
allowing him only to eat so the
says which means they spend the night
empty stomach and the guest ate of
course so the next morning when this man
went to the
Prophet The
Prophet said to him before even getting
to know what happened he
said Allah was pleased by your actions
and he revealed the
verse they choose them you know others
over themselves even if there's hardship
or difficulty for them is not to be
generous and that's it but you have one
thing either you have it or your brother
will have it you'll give it to your
brother and you won't have nothing of
it uh also one of the things to be
observed is to uh get the guest in a
place where it um it fits the like of
him you know to the best of one's
ability of course and
when when the prophet came to him and uh
he stayed in the bottom
floor and Abu was in the second floor so
Abu he was awake and and he kept
thinking to himself we'll walk in on top
of the Prophet Alat like this so they
took aside they stayed in the side of
the Upper Floor so that they don't walk
on top of the Prophet Alat wasam even
though it's in a different floor but
it's this love and this manners that
they would observe and then he said to
the
prophet the he said to him that for you
know to be for us to be on the bottom is
much easier for us and he
said the prophet he said to him actually
it's easier for us to be in the bottom
floor butar he said I cannot be in a
place where or on a floor where you're
underneath it I can't do that so the
prophet changed as a result of
that uh of course to provide for the
guest whatever they need bed or things
like you know to make the life
comfortable and as the prophet he said
that for a man should have you know a
bed for himself and a bed for his wife
and a bed for the guest and the fourth
one is for the Shan meaning because it's
excessive it's
waste um one of the things also to
protect any harm afflicting the guest
whatsoever
as when he was defending his guests the
angels and he said to the
people these are guests do not expose
me and fear Allah subhana and do not
disgrace me in front of my guests so to
protect one's guest to take care of them
to be kind to them all of that is
something that Allah subhana T commanded
us to observe ve and to be generous and
that's why it's it's nothing wrong for a
person to um kind of uh go out of one's
way when it comes to the guest it
doesn't have to be like you're you're
eating what you would normally eat no if
you have a guest you put the effort you
make more you make better uh type of
food and things of that nature and it's
not just about food but it's all kinds
of goodness as long as a person is not
wasting his time and wasting his life by
entertaining others may Allah subhana T
protect us and make us among those who
are obedient to Allah subhana tala and
we'll continue with more of the rights
next time
