and welcome back to another class in the
first level of the prophetic tradition
Hadith number 14 B
praise be to Allah and may the greatest
peace and salutations be upon Prophet
Muhammad sallu alai wasallam in Hadith
number 14 which is narrated by
abdah may Allah be pleased with him and
his father he said that the messenger of
Allah peace be upon him caught up with
om may Allah be pleased with him as he
was traveling with other Riders and
swearing by his
father then the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam said indeed Allah
forbids you to swear to your fathers
whoever must swear let him swear to
Allah or else remain
silent and this is a highly profound
Hadith and it is collected by Imam
bukari may Allah have mercy on
him when the messenger of Allah peace be
upon him said whoever must swear means
if there is a need if you have to swear
because some people who have the habit
of swearing even
unnecessarily and that is not
recommended rather that is disliked
Allah the almighty
said not for everything you
say even whenever you just talking a
vain talk you should swear whenever
you're required to swear sometimes a
person feels I would like to emphasize
my statement uh I would like to uh make
my phas sound like for real people need
to hear that and sometimes in the court
of law where the judge would ask the
witnesses or the plenti or the defendant
to swear to swear to Allah if you're
Muslim then in this case you should
swear but swearing unnecessarily is
definitely disliked and it is not
encouraged at all that's why he
said whoever must swear also let him
remain silent means if you're going to
swear you either say w or by Allah or
any of his names and attributes or you
be quiet yeah you do not swear
whatsoever meaning you do not say I
swear to my father I swear to my mother
I swear to my son I swear to the life of
my wife I swear to the most valuable
thing for me in life which is my
daughter no that is not permissible
whatsoever so peace be upon him in this
Hadith teaches us by whom we should
swear to whom we should swear and affirm
what we're saying in order to affirm
what we're saying if you want to swear
then he explained to us peace be upon
him that you should say w or by Allah or
by any of the names and ATT attributes
of Allah or do not swear at all which
means it is definitely forbidden to
swear to anything other than the
almighty Allah no matter how valuable it
is to you how much you love it how much
you rever it and if this is the case
also swearing to the prophet
saying I swear to the prophet I swear to
the messenger I swear to my father I
swear to sh so and so whether alive or
dead this is all forbidden guess what in
a sound had collected by um imami the
prophet peace be upon him said whoever
swears by anything other than Allah has
indeed ascribed Partners to Allah in
worship no one wants to do that that so
what does this mean it means it is
absolutely forbidden to swear by
anything other than Allah no matter what
or who it is or it may be it is
forbidden to do so whatsoever also we
learn from this
Hadith that the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam said in in in in
relating a Hadith and a statement
whoever swears an oath then says
inshallah then he can never break his
oath that's another benefit So when you
say
w I will visit you tomorrow the prophet
peace be upon him give us a beautiful
advice which is
to give the God willing to add the God
willing to say God willing I'll visit
you tomorrow anyway that is in the Quran
Allah the almighty enjoyed Prophet
Muhammad peace be upon him
inah
chapter number 18 as
saying don't you ever say to anything I
shall do that tomorrow I shall do that
in the future even in the next hour in
the next few minutes without saying
inshallah if Allah Wills what if he
doesn't well so what happens when you
say w I will visit you tomorrow
there are two great benefits the first
one is so when you give the mhia that
would facilitate your intention to be
executed okay Allah will make it easy
for you to do what you committed
yourself to do the second is if you
happen to fail to fulfill your oath and
you broke it in this case there is no
exceptation what does it mean it means
the old both are one of three types one
which Allah the almighty does not hold
accountable one who says it whatsoever
like if a
[Music]
person if the person didn't mean it I
met you after J prayer or leaving from
the M say why don't you come have a cup
of tea with me please w w so here W it's
an oath I took author said I swear to
Allah by Allah please come with me but
that is not categorized as a confirmed
oath this is just to encourage the
person to come forward to feel
comfortable that you really mean it but
it is not simply a confirmed oath as
called the second as the almighty Allah
stated in a number 90 89 chapter number
five
but he will account you and hold you
accountable for what you have confirmed
with the intention that if you don't do
it then there will be an expiation
somebody says I will never smoke after
today good for you alhamdulillah the
prophet peace be upon him said whoever
vows or takes an oath to do an act of
obedience let him do it what if he
failed to commit himself to do it in
this case Allah the almighty said
in the exceptation for this oath when he
said I will never by Allah I will never
do this again by Allah I will reconcile
with my sister with my friend and I will
do this and I will pray every night two
units or two ra and you fail to do it
then we said if it is something good you
should actually do
it and if you fail to do it or if you
take an oath to do something which is
bad or to abstain from do something
which is uh recommended or compulsory
then you should break your oath and give
the ransom the prophet sallallahu alaih
wasallam
said whoever takes an oath to do or not
to do something then afterward he
realized I was on mistaken I shouldn't
have done so it's an Act of Disobedience
to Allah so let him break his oath and
do what is better and pay the
exceptation or the ransom so the AY of
says the exceptation for such oath if
you fail to fulfill
it feeding 10 poor people what kind of
food and who are they and in which for
mat feeding 10 poor
people so the expiation will be as
follows number one feeding 10 poor
people or clothing them of the average
food that you eat one meal or you buy
them the raw food maybe some rice and
meat what we normally eat for lunch or
dinner one meal 10 poor people or you
feed one person 10 meals and you can do
that at the same time you give him Pro
food enough for 10 meals and that will
do or you invite 10 poor people come to
the Masid come to my house and you offer
them one meal they all eat or buy them
an outfit each if one cannot afford it
financially there is also another
alternative by but it is not available
anymore which is free in a slave neck so
the alternative in case that you don't
have the financial means is to fast for
three days and it doesn't have to be
consecutive
though
also um it is worth worthy of mention
here that some people may indulge into
another category of oath which is the
third one and this is pure Pure Evil
which is known
as and it is called because it immerses
a person who takes such oath in Hell
Fire what is the expiation in order to
repent there is no exceptation when
somebody swears to Allah lying knowingly
and deliberately if somebody did s to
Allah uh and said W I didn't do that and
he had totally forgotten there is no
problem
but the problem if he actually knows
like he appears before the judge in a
court and the judge says say w I saw
this guy doing this and this and that he
says I swear to Allah to tell the truth
I saw this guy committing this sin and
that was not true so the person who took
such oath will abide in Hellfire he he
will be immersed in that's why this oath
is known as in addition to the false
testimony and this is one of the
destructive sins abdah may Allah be
pleased with him said to swear an oath
falsely by Allah is dearer to me than
swear and oath sin sincerely by anything
other than um uh Allah the
almighty this is also to show you after
I showed you how grave sin it is to
swear and O to Allah falsely it will
make the person abide in fire but
Abdullah Mas said worse than that is to
say I swear to anyone other than Allah
even if you're telling the truth is he
telling us it's okay to swear to other
than Allah no both are forbidden but
he's stilling you that saying I swear to
my father's life to my mother's grave I
swear to the most valuable thing in my
life which is other than Allah is
terrible abdah said it's even worse than
swearing to Allah while lying and we
know that swearing to Allah while lying
will make the person abide eternally in
Hell Fire so finally it is not
permissible to swear an oath by anyone
or anything other than the almighty
Allah this is a matter concerning which
there is no consensus that is forbidden
there is actually General consensus that
is forbidden there is a general
consensus among all the scholars that it
is forbidden no matter how much you love
the person whom you swear to so those
who say I swear to the prophet please
stop and if any person happen to say I
swear to anyone including the prophet or
the father or whatever then you should
do what you should follow that by
saying in order to declare the testimony
of Faith once again whoever swears an
oath then thinks that something else is
better then let him offer the expiation
as mentioned earlier for his oath and do
that which is better a person who made
an oath and said wall I will not speak
to my sister I will not visit my mother
I will not pray in this Masjid anymore
this is definitely forbidden you know
you're making something which is either
OB obligatory like upholding the ti of
kinship or recommended like praying in
the mass uh you make it forbidden to
yourself so that oath is forbidden
immediately break your oath and give the
expiation May the Almighty Allah teach
us what what is best and guide us to his
straight path until next
time
