alhamdulillah
like all forms of worship zakat has
conditions once the conditions are
fulfilled then you must fulfill the
pillar of zakat so the first condition
is Islam which means that a person who's
not Muslim Allah does not accept zakat
from them and this is mentioned clearly
in the Quran where Allah says
that and what prevents their
expenditures from being accepted from
them but that they have disbelieved in
Allah and in his me messenger sallallahu
alaihi Al wasallam so if it is not
accepted from them then there's no point
in enforcing it upon them yet they will
be punished for that as the most
authentic opinion of Scholars
disbelievers will be punished
for the fundamentals of Islam and also
for the little things of Islam because
they're ordered instructed to do it
secondly or the second condition is that
a an individual has to be a free
person because a slave does not possess
does not own anything of his own he and
whatever possesses belongs to belong to
his master so therefore a slave does not
have to give anything um as per the
zakat number three is that possessing
the minimum amount of wealth at which
zakat becomes due this is known as the
threshold the nisab
so there is a certain limit below it
there is no zakat so in silver it's 595
grams if you have 594 grams there's no
zakat in Gold it's 85 grams if you have
84 grams there is no zakat 85 and above
you have to give zakat Allah says oh
Muhammad take from their wealth a
charity by which you
purify them so this is something that
Allah mentioned which is take from their
wealth so it has to belong to me it has
to be my
possession which brings us to many many
points that we could answer and that is
if I have money with someone else and
he's refusing to bring it or give it
back to me should I pay zakat how would
I pay zakat when I do not possess that
wealth it's mine but I can't put my
hands on it so there is no zakat on it
until I have uh full control over it and
the fourth condition
is that the time is due which is the one
full hij year has passed since acquiring
the wealth and this applies for
um Gold Silver and and and and banknotes
currency it applies for trading Goods it
applies
for uh livestocks but it doesn't apply
for U for example what comes out from
the earth because the date due is the
harvesting
date and the prophet
saidat no zakat is due on wealth until
one full year has passed so these are
the conditions that Scholars us usually
mention when talking about
zakat however there are four things that
are exempt from these conditions or uh
something around that uh these lines and
is not necessary for one full year to
pass before paying zakat on them what
are they number
one and this is everything on which one
tenth that is the or half of one tenth
must be given that is the uh uh the
crops and the fruit as we mentioned a
bit earlier number two the metals and
minerals and the RAS the treasures and
this is a one
timer amount that is taken which
according to the textbook is called
zakat number three the prophet on
trade because though the trade goods
have a specific date per year that I
have to give zakat after one lunar year
passes The Profit made from such Capital
if I get the prophet couple of weeks
before the due date of zakat I have to
gives a cat on it why because it follows
the capital and the original amount of
uh uh money Number
Four The Offspring of grazing animals
the livestock so if I have for example
um 40
sheep and I keep those for one lunar
year after one lunar year I have to give
one sheep as
zakat but if during these or this year
the 40
sheep
produced more sheep I have to give
according to the final total number of
zakat because this is part of the sheep
itself
what's the logic what's the wisdom
behind
mandating zakat number one
purification of the wealth and putting
Baraka in it and making it
increase number two
purifying the person giving zakat from
being
stingy and
from hoarding the money so it expands
your chest and makes you a better person
and it cleanses you from sins that you
will be punished for otherwise number
three training and teaching an
individual to give in the cause of
Allah number four to conso the poor and
meet their
needs imagine if you're poor and you see
wealthy people around you and none of
them is giving you anything when they
give you their zakat you feel their
Brotherhood you feel that you belong to
a
community number five to instill the
spirit of mutual support cooperation and
the love among the members of the
community and finally
to show your gratitude to Allah Asel
over what he has given you among this
wealth and prosperity that he has
showered you
with now there are a number of related
issues the scholars usually mention when
they talk about issues of of
zakat a lot of the Muslims ask I'm in
debt so I
borrowed 100 ,000 from someone and I
have in my
possession money that is
zable should
I consider the debt something that
blocks me from giving
zakat the answer is
no either you pay off your debt before
the zakat is due so now you don't have
any wealth in your
possession or you you give zakat on
whatever wealth you have in your
possession so if I have
100,000 loan to an individual and in my
possession in my wallet I have
50,000 once a whole year passes and the
50,000 is in my possession I must give
2.5% over
that the
100,000 debt does not impact me giving
zakat if I don't want want to give zakat
on it before the year is over I have to
pay the
50,000 uh uh to the debtor so that I
would not have any cash to give zakat on
what about if I saved money whether for
Hajj to build a house to get
married again the same concept
applies does it reach the threshold yes
did a full lunar year pass while it is
in my possession yes then you have to
give
zakat what
if the
threshold is not
reached meaning I
have the threshold or
over for 11 months and 25
days five days before the zakat is
due the the the amount of money is
depleted I buy something I give it uh uh
to pay a debt on me so now I possess
less than the threshold the lunar year
is interrupted and now I start a new
lunar year once the threshold reaches
the limit so
that I don't have to pay zakat on
something that did not finish a full
lunar year and and the the first
condition of zakat which is owning and
possessing the threshold was interrupted
before the year was
over another issue that is related to
this what about or what is the ruling on
jewelry other than gold and silver so
some women May possess some even men
diamonds rubies emeralds precious stones
uh um pearls and the likes the scholars
say there is no zakat on it why if you
remember we mentioned that the
categories or the types of zakat wealth
are four according to your textbook are
five if you remember them and memorize
them and anyone asking you about pearls
or rubies you would say it doesn't they
don't fall under the five category
therefore there is no zakat on them
except of course if you're a Trader if
you're a merchant so you're having these
precious metals and stones and jewelry
and you sell and buy so now they become
trade goods and it is
zable okay a lot of us are
kind and helpful to others people come
and and they borrow from us money so
what's the ruling on zakat of
debts it depends someone came and took a
$100,000
dollar I wish from
me and now a whole year is
due and I have to give zakat should I
give zakat on that money because it's
mine
it depends if that
individual is someone who's capable of
paying it back I have to give zakat on
it every single
year so if I go to that individual says
listen I need my money back he said give
me a couple of days and he gives it back
to me then every day on my zakat date I
have to include this 100,000 in my zakat
and give
2,500 if this
individual is not capable of returning
it so every year before the zakat date I
give him a call and I say listen buddy
the 100,000 you borrowed three four
years ago from me he said W I don't have
anything I am Stone broke I don't have a
penny but inshallah I'll try my level
best and he doesn't show up and he does
not give it
back or or if I call and he says I
haven't taken anything from you said you
took 100,000 From Me 3 years ago said do
you have any proof do you have any
Witnesses I said no said well you could
sue me do whatever you want I'm not
giving you back anything so in these two
cases someone who Stone broke or someone
who's refusing to return the money
there's no zakat on me until
the day I receive some or all of the
money
back so let's assume five years later
the guy becomes capable of paying it
back he pays me 20,000 and he says I'll
promise you that I'll pay the 80,000
soon the moment I receive the 20,000 I
have to give 2.5% of
it over the past years whether it's one
year 5 years 10 years it doesn't matter
once I give
2.5% if he gives me the whole thing the
same thing applies and every time he
gives me a portion of it I do the same
process over what he has given me and
this is the most authentic opinion of
Scholars and Allah Knows
Best
