alhamdulillah now who are
entitled to receive the
zakat who are those entitled to receive
the
zakat this was mentioned
in chapter n Surah TBA verse number 60
Allah the almighty says
zakat
expenditures are only for the
poor and for the
needy and for the
those employed to collect the zakat and
for those whose hearts are to be one
over and for the freeing of the captures
that is the slaves as we will explain
and for those in debt and for the cause
of Allah and for the stranded Travelers
an obligation imposed by Allah the
Almighty
so these are the eight categories known
to be
as and to go into details they are
number one the
poor and the poor is the person who does
not have enough to meet his
needs and the needs of those who depend
upon him whether it be food drink
clothing shelter and the likes so he has
nothing or he has less than half of what
suffices him and he is
given the provision that would suffice
him for one year from
zakat while the needy or a MK is someone
who's better
but still he's in need so he may have
more than half of what he
needs for him and for his
dependence but it's still not enough so
how can we evaluate between the poor and
the
needy Scholars usually say
that who could not find what is enough
such as he may find lunch but he can't
find dinner
his salary May suffice him if he's
working for one week but not to the rest
of the month while someone who's in need
might be better off he might have a car
he may he may live in a house he may
have food for lunch and dinner but still
it's not enough for his needs he may
need money to pay for the medical bills
and he's unable to do so yes he has a
salary he has food on the table he has a
roof on his head it's not enough for him
to uh uh it would not suffice him in
that field so this is the difference
between the poor and the
needy the third category is those who
work and are employed to collect the
zakat and we we have
to point out a common mistake that a lot
of the people uh uh may think of they
may think of this category to refer for
those working in charity
organizations and this is not true
they're not legible for zakat even if
they are working to collect zakat and
charity and distribute it this category
mentioned in this Ayah those employed to
collect zakat refer only to those
employed by the
Imam by the Muslim ruler because this
is a public
service unlike charity
organizations who may be funded by zakat
may be funded
by charity yet it's not a public
service they get their salaries from
what they collect are from
donors those employed to collect the
zakat which is a pillar of Islam this is
referring to the
employees employed by the Muslim
ruler so they devote themselves to such
a
job even if they're
rich even if they're not poor or needy
but because they're working for the
government they are given from uh uh the
zakat according to their work number
four is those whose hearts are to be one
over and this is the only
category that we're allowed to give
zakat to
non-muslims so if we have people who are
disbelievers but they might be
influencers
that are
influencing their followers tribe
leaders who hearts are
inclined they have a genuine feeling of
to Islam and we think that if we give
them some money that they would be
encouraged to enter Islam which would
include those who are behind them or at
least if we give them from the zakat
their parents their loved ones
um that would help or in cases where an
individual is harming Islam and the
Muslims and we give him from the zakat
to protect Islam and the Muslims from
attacking us or we give it to someone
who accepted
Islam but he's on the brink because all
of his family left him and he's
in depression or the like so we give him
something to uh uh strengthen his IM
this becomes uh um acceptable
insh and this is one of the ways we can
spend zakat uh in the fifth category is
for freeing the captive now
this in the Quran it's
called and in expiations
the first thing that comes is to free a
slave and this is what people think of
that this is what freeing a slave would
mean so if there
are
slaves we could free them from zakat
because Islam highlight and endorses and
encourages freeing of slaves anything
you do expasion free a slave which shows
you that Islam is not a religion that
promotes slavery slavery is there due to
a legitimate reason and to solve a big
problem but to free the slaves is
encouraged in Islam however this
category of freeing captives could also
referred
to those prisoners of war that were
captured and captivated by the enemies
of Islam so if there's a war between
Muslims and the non-muslims and they
have Muslim
prisoners then it is permissible for us
to pay from the zakat money to free them
and to get them out as well
and the sixth category is known as um
those who are in
debt someone
who has a huge debt and this debt was
incurred due to Halal purposes for
example someone who was in a
business and The Business failed and he
went
bankrupt and the debtors are all at his
case they want their money back in this
case as long as the reason was Halal and
for legitimate reason and it was not for
extravagance or for um things that are
worldly then there is no problem in that
why do I say this let's assume that I
got myself into debt to buy a fancy
luxurious car which I don't need and
then I knock on people's doors and say
listen I have installments to pay and
debt it's too much help me no this is
not legitimate sell your
car why do you buy a 100,000 or
$200,000 worth of a car and then you say
I'm in debted no we're talking about
someone who's totally broke had to
borrow to pay the rent had to borrow to
pay the medical bills that are so uh um
much and and he wouldn't be able to pay
them off this kind of a person is a
person who's entitled uh to be uh in
debt and to be given from the zakat
money the seventh category is that for
those or for the cause of
Allah and the wor
is so
generic that some Scholars open the door
for any type of
Charity so building masjids it's it's
for the cause of Allah building this
building that digging an an a water well
this is not
true refers to those who are figh ing in
the cause of Allah to defend Islam and
to defend the Muslims these
are and these are to be given from zakat
money whether they're rich or poor it
doesn't matter because they've devoted
themselves for this noble
cause some Scholars
included in this category those Ste
students of knowledge Seekers of Islamic
knowledge to be specific and those who
call to Islam someone who devoted
himself to go to places and preach Islam
and teach Muslims and new Muslims how to
become real Muslims someone who devoted
his entire life or most of his time for
this noble cause
so Scholars said that this is for the
cause of Allah
why why was fighting in the cause of
Allah initiated in the first place Jihad
why to
spread the message of Islam and to
prevent those blocking it from reaching
the people from what they're doing this
is the purpose of jihad to spread the
message of Islam so
whether you do this with the sword or
you do it with the pen it has the same
impact and therefore it can be given
also to the people um are who are doing
it by preaching and
teaching and the eighth category is the
one who's stranded a traveler who was
stranded is known in uh uh Arabic as
and this refers to a traveler who is cut
off someone who traveled to another
city happen to lose his documents his
wealth his money and this happens a lot
in Mecca for example people coming for
omra for ha and everything is
lost nowadays it's easier to get access
to funds even if you're
rich when you're rich by phone calls by
credit cards by ATMs and the likes you
can get a substitute to whatever was
stolen or lost but sometimes it's not
possible so even if the individual who
stranded is actually rich and his lot of
money back home but at the moment he's
stranded he has no ability to reach his
funds in this case such a person can be
given zakat without any problem
now there are a number of points to be
pointed out among them do we have to
incubate the eight categories that we've
just mentioned when I give zakat so if I
have $1,000 I have to give a 100 here
100 here so that I would give all the
eight categories answer is no I can give
it to all I can give it to one because
Allah
says if you disclose your uh Char
charity or charitable expenditures they
are good but if you uh conceal them and
give them to the poor that is better for
you so I can give it to all of them or I
can give it to a specific one of them
without any problem also the Hadith of
the Prophet Alat wasam that zakat is to
be taken from the rich and given back to
the poor which indicates that this is
the case I don't have to give all eight
categories each one of them at the same
time I can pick and
choose what's the ruling on transf
transferring zakat from one country to
the other there is no problem in doing
this because sometimes as I've mentioned
in the earlier Hadith and in thei of mu
when the prophet sent him to Yemen he
told him to inform the Muslims that
Allah has mandated a zakat which is a
charity charity amount due to be taken
from the rich and to be given to the
poor and he did not indicate whether
this is in their country or
elsewhere the norm at the time was that
the surplus of the zakat was taken from
Yemen and given to Medina and
distributed to the poor elsewhere so
this is totally permissible sometimes I
may have poor relatives elsewhere
sometimes we may have poor and needy
Muslims that are far far greater in need
than uh those who are living in our
country and this makes it uh okay to uh
move it inshallah without any
problem um zakat must be like any other
form
of given out at the uh uh correct and
specific time so it cannot be
delayed you have to pay this date
you have to P it off you can't delay it
to another date and you have to give it
once the time is
due but if there is a need to give it up
front this is permissible as well
without any problem
[Music]
inall and there are a number of issu
isues to be mentioned as well and this
is inshallah what we will discuss in the
following uh lesson
