alhamdulillah we move on to one of the
chapters of zakat which is
Zak zakat is called because it becomes
obligatory upon Muslims when they break
their fast that is
Al and this happens at the end of the
month of Ramadan what's the ruling it is
a
f it is mandatory it is obligatory upon
each and every Muslim whether old or
young whether female or or male whether
a free person or even a slave this was
mandated by the prophet
himself as per the Hadith ofar may Allah
be pleased with him and with his father
when the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam mandated that he
enjoined at the end of Ramadan and he
specifically stated that it should be
one of the
following uh uh Foods dates or a s of
barley upon every Muslim slave or free
male or female young or old now who is
it mandated upon it is mandated upon
those whom we have just mentioned
usually it's the father of the family
who gives it off to those dependent upon
him his wife and his
children and Those
whom it's mandated upon him to give
their uh um uh expenditure so if he has
relatives
that are under his sponsorship like a
brother like a sister or a grandchild or
a father a grandfather then it is H it
has to be given away uh on their
behalf and it is mandated upon those who
find their food of the
day but if someone doesn't have enough
food except of today in this case it is
not mandatory upon him to give it
because other people would give it to
him so if you have what suffices you for
today and the nighttime of the Eid then
you have to give it if you have whatever
exceeds that you have to give zakat Al
according to uh what was mentioned
earlier what are the conditions of such
a
category um in Zak
it is a must that the individual is a
Muslim so if you have a non-muslim a
Christian wife for example you do not
give
zakat uh on her behalf it cannot be
accepted it the second condition is that
you have Surplus to your needs on the
day of Eid and the night of Eid for you
and for your dependence
so we're talking about someone who
is broke stone
broke who's who cannot give zakat Al
anyone who's a bit better than Stone
broke then it is a must for him to give
uh this uh zakat what's the wisdom
behind it the wisdom as mentioned in the
Hadith of Abdullah Abbas may Allah be
pleased with him that the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam
said um or he said that the prophet
enjoined zakat to purify the fasting
person from idle talk and inent talk and
to feed the poor and the
needy whoever gives it before
Salat then or the Eid prayer it is
accepted Zak
but whoever gives it after the prayer
then it's ordinary charity he did not
fulfill the requirement and that what
was needed the wisdom of it is that the
poor would
not be begging on the day of Eid because
the night before all the Muslims gave
their zakat which
feeds those who are Stone broke for that
day so that they would not be in need of
begging others in addition to its
purification impact or effect on the
person who fasted for 30 days now this
charity would purify any idle talk or
indecent talk that was uh that took
place during that
time now what amount must be given in
the Hadith the prophet Al directed us to
give
one
and is a measurement unit of size and
not weight and one is composed of four
mud and a mud it was is what you gather
in both of your hands so you'd put four
scoops of that and this would collect a
and it has to be from local staple food
so whether it's wheat barley dates
raisins dry yogurt rice corn spaghetti
ma macaroni and and the likes all that
is considered to be staple food would
suffice and would do the job inshallah I
or Abu Al may Allah be pleased with him
uh say that on the day of Al at the time
of the Prophet Alam we would give One S
of food stuff and our food stuff was
barley uh uh
raisins uh dried yogurt and dates so it
depends on the time of the people so if
someone gives something that
is used by the people
and consumed by the people as staple
food that would uh do the
job every year we get the same old
discussion can we give cash
money and the vast majority of
Scholars state
that this is not permissible you have to
give it as prescribed by the prophet
Alam he prescribed to us that we give it
in staple food so you have to follow
this and you must not um break that
using your logic what's the logic let's
of the people say a when we give rice to
the poor they'll take it and resell it
with a cheaper price and that would mean
loss for them and most of them don't
want food they want cash
said what was prescribed in Islam we
have to abide by it if you want to be
more charitable and you would like to
give them cash in addition that's fine
with me so give them the of food as
prescribed by the prophet and give them
some cash as well there is no problem in
that so the reasons for
not for cash not to be accepted in
replacement of staple food is one the
prophet saidat whoever introduces in
this matter of ours something that is
not part of it then it is rejected and
it was the prophet who directed us to
give it in food
two the
companions may Allah be pleased with
them in the life of the prophet and
afterwards would give food
as Zak though they had gold and silver
and and cash though the people needed
cash at the time nevertheless they did
not
substitute what was prescribed for cash
or money or the likes because they
followed what the prophet saidat
wasam thirdly there is a significant
relationship between giving it in the
form of food and
fasting which was an act of worship we
did for 30 days as we were ordered not
to eat not to drink for these 30 days
then on the day
ofid we were allowed to eat so it
was relatable to understand that as long
as today is a day of feasting and eating
and drinking we should give zakat
of what we refrained from that is food
and this should be very
clear when should we give zakat Al when
does it become obligatory Scholars say
it is obligatory from the sunset of the
last day of Ramadan so if the last day
is the
30th and Eid is tomorrow so once the sun
sets
this is when we are obliged to give
zakat
Al
and this has to be given before the Eid
prayer begins so it's a very short
period of
time counted by hours only and there are
two types or two times that we can uh
give it at a time that is preferred and
a time that is
permissible the time
of being preferred is as I've just
mentioned at the at the sunset of the
last day of
Ramadan which makes makes it very
limited for me to give the poor as for
the time of
permissibility it is permissible to give
it a day or two before Eid and not more
and this is according to the Hadith of
may Allah be pleased with him that the
companions used to give it one or two
days before Eid so on the 28th day of
Ramadan after Sunset you have that
period the 29th uh maybe 23rd uh maybe
the 30th that is that would be a day or
two before the Eid uh is due is the time
of permissibility and this is what most
Muslims uh do and give it in and Allah
