sleeping is something that that each and
every human being actually each and
every creature may
need
and if a person does not sleep there's
something wrong with him he's sick so it
is a human nature that we fall
asleep our Prophet Alat being the best
human ever to walk the earth used to
sleep as
well he used to sleep on a leather mat
sometimes sometimes on a mattress
sometimes on a read mat or on the ground
or maybe on a bed his
mattress was made of leather which is
tanned hide stuffed with palm fibers the
pillow was made of the same the prophet
Alat wasam
did not sleep because it was a
luxury rather he slept because it was
needed and whenever he went to sleep
they would not woke wake him up until he
walked by
himself he surrounded
sleeping with a lot of
AAR which makes us believe that he dealt
with sleeping as a form of worship not
as a necessity of his own body so for
example whenever he went to bed he used
to take his right hand put it underneath
his right cheek and he used to say the
Dua oh my Lord
protect me from your punishment on the
day you uh gather your slaves or on the
day of
resurrection and he would also
say many many
different
AAR H may Allah be pleased with him
tells us about one of these AAR that the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam used
to uh supplicate and say
he used to
say and when he wakes up he says
alhamdulillah and all of
these should be learned in Arabic while
knowing the meaning of it in English of
course but because they are part of the
religion we say them in Arabic to the
best of our ability the Hadith of anas
Malik
that the prophet sallallah alaihi
wasallam whenever he went to bed he used
to say
alhamdulillah and if we were to
translate this that would take us a lot
of time you'll find it in your textbooks
insh also part of the etiquette of going
to bed mother AA tells us that the
prophet used to cup his hands and then
he used to blow in them
first and then
recite
and the three last chapters of the
Quran and then he would wipe all of his
face body head whatever he can from the
front part of his body and he does this
three
times IB Abbas may Allah be pleased with
him and with his father he tells us that
the prophet sallallah alaihi wasallam
slept so soundly that he began to
breathe deeply and when he slept he
would breathe deeply
then Bal came to him and told him that
it was time to pray so he woke up got up
and prayed and did not perform woodo now
this is problematic to some because
there are hadiths as we've studied in
the chapter dealing with Tara Purity in
that one of the things that nullify
woodo is sleeping but here
abas tells us that the prophet would not
perform W well Im nawi explained this
and he says to us that this was one of
the characteristics of the Prophet
Alat because mother asked him the same
question how come you pray after waking
up without performing wo he said my
heart does not sleep but my eyes do
meaning that I'm aware if I were to have
nullified my woodu because my heart is
always active and aware so this is a
speciality of the Prophet Alat wasam
that is not shared by anyone else part
of the etiquette of
sleeping which the prophet used to do
most of his timeat is to sleep on your
right hand side and there are many
medical reports stating that this is the
best posture for uh or position to sleep
and they say that this is good for the
heart it's good for your digesting uh
the food and the
likes part of the etiquet of sleeping is
before you go to your
bed it is a to brush off the bed
before you lie on it because the Prophet
saidat this in an authentic Hadith when
one of you goes to his bed let him brush
off his bed with the inside of his isar
the lower garment for he does not know
what came onto it after he left it then
let him say the Dua
so the prophet here is telling us that
we should brush our beds whenever we
want to go to sleep whether this is in
the beginning of the night or if we walk
up in the middle of the night we went to
the toilet and came back we do this as
well and this is
to cleanse to clean to make sure that
nothing had fallen on the bed after we
left it such as dust dirt or U insects
and we we all know that at sometime this
year it
was well known in Europe in France and
elsewhere that they had the spread of
bed
bugs and that was a big problem that
they had to uh uh clean the hotels and
their homes from it before it was spread
like a
pandemic now part of the etiquette of
going to bed is to
perform and many people would say come
on I'm too tired I don't want to well
this is a Sunnah and this is a highly
recommended Sunnah because the prophet
advised His companion
may Allah be pleased with him to do so
before going to
sleep as mentioned before it is a Sunnah
to sleep on your right hand side and to
use your right arm as a
pillow but there is no problem in lying
on your back because that was also
reported that the prophet did this he
uh lied on his back in the Masjid
putting his right foot on his uh uh
erected left
knee and this is not a problem and
likewise sleeping on your left side is
Forgiven because there is no prohibition
mentioned in the Sunnah regarding this
issue so there is no problem in doing
that alh dillah but what's the ruling on
sleeping on your stomach this is an
issue of dispute there are a Hadith
reported and some of the compa some of
the scholars authenticated it saying
that it is the manner of lying down that
Allah
despises and that it is part of the
people of Hell how they lie down and she
albani authentic iated one of them
authenticated one of them however some
Scholars say that these are not
authentic at all and among those is Imam
bukari the greatest of all imams of
Hadith the compiler of theah alkari Imam
Al bukari stated that not a single
Hadith is authentic in the prohibition
of lying on your stomach so it is best
to avoid it but if someone does it I
feel that this is permissible
inshallah and there are many manyar to
be stated before going to bed so for
example Subhan Allah
alhamdulillah 33 times and Allah abbar
34 times the total is 100 this would
give you the strength to work the
following day as if you have a servant
helping you in the house this
was advised by the prophet Alam to Ali
and to Fatima may Allah be pleased with
them also the prophet Sall alhi wasallam
taught may Allah be pleased with him to
recite and this Surah the prophet Alat
wasam said to him that it dis
vowel is a dis vowel of shik So when you
say it you don't have any shik before
going to bed also the prophet
himself used to not go to bed before he
recited and
also and in some narrations he used to
recite Surah is
andah and these are long suras at least
it would take you like 20 minutes or 15
to 20 minutes to finish them but it
shows you how the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam dealt
with sleeping that it was a form of
worship to
Allah and
the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
stated in an authentic Hadith that there
is a Surah in the Quran 30 verses which
interceded for a man until he was
forgiven it
is and it is something that people
should um try to memorize and say it
every single night before they go to bed
also so if a person wakes up startled or
frightened because of a nightmare he saw
or for any other reason the Sunnah is to
say these
words this is something that a person
should say the moment he's startled or
he wakes up from a nightmare or
something that intimidated him or
frightened him
