what is the ruling on fasting the month
of Ramadan
Ramadan fasting it is one of the pillars
of Islam so it is the highest obligation
in our
religion it's a pillar it's mandatory
it's obligatory Allah says in the Quran
oh you who believe decreed upon you is
fasting as it was decreed upon those
before you that you may become
righteous Allah say says so whoever
cites the new moon of the month let him
fast it so fasting is
mandatory may Allah be pleased with him
says that a nomad came to the prophet
Al and he said oh prophet of Allah tell
me what has Allah obliged upon me to
fast so the prophet saidat wasam the
month of Ramadan
so The Nomad said do I have to fast
anything else the prophet said no except
if you would like to offer something
voluntary and the consensus so this is
the quran's evidence of its obligation
this is the Sunnah evidence of obl its
obligation and then we go to the
third branch of evidences which is the
consensus of the Muslim scholar and the
Muslims at large that it is mandated it
it is an obligation whoever denies it or
rejects fasting of Ramadan says no I
don't believe of its obligation then he
is a disbelieving
apostate now Muslims usually fast
Ramadan how do they fast Ramadan there
is a condition for that and this
condition is that the Muslims in a
region have to see the Crescent they
have to see the new
moon being born in order to identify
that the month of Ramadan has
entered and this is part of the ease of
Islam with the grace of
Allah those who depend on gorian
calendars February March April Etc can
never know when the month started and
when the month
ended except by looking at their
calendars or their
watches if they were stranded in an
island if they went into a Kama and woke
up they can not never know that in Islam
everything is easy we depend on the
lunar mon mons so just looking at the
heavens looking at the skies above you
you can identify whether in the
beginning of the month the middle of the
month or the end of the
month the prophet saysat wasam when you
see it then fast when you see the
new moon this is when you should begin
to fast and he
says fast when you see it and stop
fasting when you see it and if it is too
cloudy for you to see then complete the
month of shaan as 30 days
so this is a very easy thing for all
Muslims
to
handle you don't have to be a rocket
scientist you see the new moon then this
is the beginning of the month if
you fail to see the new moon because the
month is either this or this this is
what the prophet
saidat a lunar month an Islamic month
can either be 29 days or 39 day or 30
days it cannot be
31 and it cannot be
28 this is a given so when it is today
the 29th of the previous month of
Ramadan which is
Shaban the 29th is is over Sunset is
done we go out and we try to look and
Trace the new moon we did all that we
can we even used telescopes and this is
permissible because the prophet said
Alam fast for seeeing it and refrain
from fasting break your fast for seeing
it so we have to have a visual contact
we can do this with binoculars with
telescopes and the
likes this is permissible in Islam but
we can't depend on
calculations and say no no no tomorrow
is the first of Ramadan by calculation
no it has to be a a visual contact it
has to be seen
visibly so if we fail to see
it then by default tomorrow is the 30th
of shaan whether we fail to see it
because it was not born or it was cloudy
or it was
Dusty so we have to fast the following
day and considered it to be the 30th of
shaan and then by default the following
day would be the first of
Ramadan an important point is
that each region has its own sighting of
the
Moon and this is an issue of dispute
among Scholars
they say we should
unite and the whole globe should fast
the first day of Ramadan on a
Saturday because we've cited the moon in
New Zealand so the people on the United
States or in Europe or in the Middle
East should follow and this is not the
most authentic opinion because IB Abbas
may Allah be pleased with him who is one
of the the greatest Companions of the
Prophet Alam and his cousin and at the
same time one of the greatest Scholars
of the
companion in
Muslim when mua may Allah be pleased
with him was the ruler of the
Muslims he was in a sham in Syria in the
L
countries and before
the
said to
Medina it was the day of
Ramadan and he reached Medina at the end
of Ramadan so I Abbas may Allah be
pleased with him asked him when did you
guys see the new moon
in
Syria he said we saw it
at the night of a
Friday Abbas said ah in Medina we saw it
at the night of a Saturday we saw it the
following
day so we will continue until we see the
new moon or we complete the month
30 so qu said to him wouldn't be
sufficient to follow our
exciting in Syria meaning you should
consider Ramadan had started on Saturday
on on um the night of Friday which is a
Saturday not like you it started on a
Sunday shouldn't that be sufficient he
said no this is the way of the
Prophet this is the this how the prophet
ordered us to do and this is the closest
and most authentic opinion according to
the evidences we have at hand Allah says
in the Quran so whoever cites the new
moon of the month let him fast it what
does this mean that if I did not witness
the new moon if I I'm in Malaysia and I
didn't witness the Moon yes they
witnessed it in
Mecca but it's a different region it's a
different place all together then we do
not follow their sighting we follow our
own Region's sighting and this is what
the prophet said fast when you see it
and stop fasting when you see it
now the entrance of
Ramadan can be witnessed by one witness
alone so if only one man comes and says
I was in the desert and I saw the new
more the new uh Moon it was born a
couple of hours ago the judge
investigates with him and says where did
you see it which direction and how did
it look how where was it pointing once
he verifies that he's telling the truth
his testimony is accepted one
man however the end of
Ramadan when we are
looking for the new moon of sha the
following month so that it would be then
we require two
witnesses the testimony of two
witnesses is required and not only one
if only one comes forward we do not
accept his testimony and we wait until
we finish Ramadan for 30 days as per the
sunah now what are the conditions of
being obligatory to fast the month of
Ramadan
so number one to be a Muslim which means
that if a Jew or a Christian fasts the
month of Ramadan just because everyone
else is fasting that would not be
accepted
and it is not uh um something
that they would be rewarded for
condition number two to be an adult
meaning that to reach the age of puberty
so if a child that did not reach the age
of
puberty
fast then that's good and he'd be
rewarded but if he did did not fast it
is not mandatory upon him and we don't
say that you have to make it up
number three being of a sound mind so if
a person who's
insane he's not obliged to Fast And even
if this insane person did not eat or
drink it would not be accepted from him
because he doesn't have his mind he's
not sayane and the prophet
said that the pen of accountability has
been lifted from three and one of them
is is a person who is insane until he
comes back to his
senses number four to be a residing
person and not traveling and this means
that a person who's traveling is not
obliged to to fast yes once he comes
back he has to make up for these days
missed but it's not obligatory for him
to fast
number five the ability to fast so
someone who's unable to fast whether due
to illness or traveling then he is not
obliged to fast because Allah says and
whoever is ill or on a journey than an
equal number of other days meaning to
make them up number
six the absence of obstacles that
prevent a person from fasting and
these usually uh obstacles are referring
to a woman being um in her mensis or in
the state of postpartum
bleeding so if she is in that state even
if she fasts her fast is invalid because
the prophet
ordered women to do so the prophet
asked isn't it that when a woman is in
her mensis she doesn't pray and she
doesn't fast so this is a clear
indication that a woman in her mensis or
in her postnatal bleeding should not
fast and if she does that would not be
accepted from
her now having said that it is important
to know that the fast is divided into
two types as we said before obligatory
fasting and voluntary fasting and the
obligatory
fasting is either its obligation comes
from Allah such as the obligation to
fast Ramadan or or either it's due to
something that I have done by myself or
as a cons consequence of something I've
done such as taking an oath if Allah
saves my son from this illness I will
Fast for seven days I obligated this
upon myself so it becomes
mandatory or as a
consequence if I did a particular sin I
have to fast three days or I have to
fast two consecutive months such as the
experation or the penalty for killing
someone by mistake is to fast two
consecutive months so this is a an
obligation upon me to do so the other
voluntary uh uh fast is
something
that Islam recommends us to to do and
this is similarly to fasting Mondays and
Thursdays but this is something
inshallah that we will talk about when
we meet next time so until then I leave
