Welcome to this new lesson and episode
from the
uh level four at Zad Academy. And we are
dealing today with surah al
and this is a mecc surah revealed before
the hijra of the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam where allahel says after
Shaitan.
So these are eight ayas. We stop here.
We will continue inshallah the rest of
the surah in the coming lesson. But
today dealing with these eight ayas
where allahel starts by saying recite in
the name of your lord who created
created man from a clinging substance
that is
recite and your lord is the most
generous
who taught by the pen.
taught man what that which which he knew
not
but indeed man transgresses
because he sees himself self-sufficient
indeed to your lord is the return now
first coming to the virtue of this
surah. Uh the commentators
Mufas
mostly uh uh out of the view that this
surah was the first surah revealed to
the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
particularly the five ays in the
beginning from ayah 1 to ayah 5 where it
says that which he knew not.
So from
to.
So these are five five ayats and
according to the muer these are the
first five ayas revealed upon the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Coming to the meaning
recite of your uh in the in the name of
your lord who created
that is recite oh Muhammad seeking help
by virtue of the name of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala created all things
everything meaning everything was
created by Allah subhana t this is like
the verse where allahel says
Allah
Allah is a creator of all things or
everything
created man from a clinging substance.
The word is translated as clinging
substance refers to a clock a clot of
congealed blood because they said
because it's really hanging and stuck to
the wall of the womb inside the woman's
uh uh body. That's that's why it's
called recite and your lord is the most
generous. This is confirming and
emphasizing the previous command to
recite for your lord is generous and
forbearing
subhanahu wa'tala and he overlooks the
misconduct of his slaves subhanahu wa
ta'ala
who taught by the pen that is he taught
them how to write with the pen before
this before man would not would be
ignorant but allahel taught him to use
the pen in order to write and then to
read.
Subhan Allah. By by the grace of Allah
taught man that which he knew not.
He taught man writing which he did not
know and he taught him everything. All
other things beside writing. But then
look,
this is a word of rebuke and deterrence.
uh
and and and then the word always is used
a lot in the glorious Quran which is a
negation of what uh you know what will
be coming or actually uh rebuke of an
action that is going to to come uh after
some blessing or good thing that was
given by allahel but then uh man uh
indeed
transgresses as as the ayah would would
come. So actually Allah blessed uh the
human being by creating him in good
shape and teaching him that which he did
not know. But then he transgresses. Here
allahel tells us that uh man is insolent
and reckless and prone to transgression.
That what he does. He is always
uh
as we say in Arabic, insolent, reckless,
and prone to transgression because he
sees himself.
He he thinks that he is he's so uh
self-sufficient and dependent upon
himself and he does not need allahel
and he's not aware of what he's supposed
to do as as a human being after Allah
blessed him with all these blessings. Uh
but of course uh uh a believer is is on
the opposite. He think that he he thinks
always that he's dependent upon allahel
and he needs Allah even and he does he
has uh he needs Allah at all times all
the time he is in need of allahel
because he is his lord and he wants to
thank him and worship him to the best of
his ability indeed to your lord is the
return
of course this is a warning from allahel
to mankind against transgression that
don't transgress because at the end
you'll be coming to allahel. He will
hold you accountable for whatever you do
and for everything that you do in order
to be on the right path. What can we
learn from these ays? Well, first the
prophet sallall alaihi wasallam was
unlettered. He was uh um um meaning he
did not know how to write and and and
and to read. And allahel says in another
um verse in the glorious Quran
as he says subhanahu wa ta'ala in
he says
and you were not able to read any book
before this meaning this glorious Quran
nor were you able to write with your
right hand.
In that case, the following the
followers of falsehood
would indeed
uh have cause to doubt. They will have
something to to argue about if you were
to write and read. But allahel made the
prophetam illiterate in the sense that
he was not uh he was unlettered. He did
not know how to write and to read. And
this serves to establish the proof
against everyone.
These are three things that uh you know
this ayah proves. First that the
prophetat wasam
brought a book that is beyond the
capability of great men of learning. So
that is it means it's coming from
allahel. Secondly, uh this is a
reputation of everyone who claims that
the Quran and the Sunnah were fabricated
by the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam or were taken from other
sources like previous books from the
Jews and the Christians. Actually this
is coming purely from Allah directly to
the prophetat wasam because the
prophetam was unlettered and he was not
in contact with any of these uh people
uh of of the book
and no one taught him this except
allahel. Also this proves that the false
notion that some people said that he was
um from
from Mecca actually it shows that he did
not know how to read and write and
allahel taught him taught taught him and
taught even man before in the first of
of creation where allahel taught the man
how to write with a pen and then uh
again he taught the prophet wasallam the
glorious Quran
but not necessarily uh in writing and
reading but rather by conveying the
message uh verbally through uh
the angel Gabrieli.
Secondly, Allahel mentioned the mentions
the creation of man created man in
particular by way of honoring him uh
because allahel says elsewhere in
So allahel honored the children of Adam
by creating them first and
by carrying them as as Allah says and we
have certainly honored the children of
Adam and carried them on the land and
sea and provided for them of the good
things and prefer them over much of what
we have created with definite
preference.
So if if Allah did this to human beings,
they should be very um thankful and they
should praise Allahel and worship him
and obey him in his own commands
subhanahu wa ta'ala. Coming to the
activities of this uh lesson, what is
the importance of knowledge according to
Islamic teachings? Speak about that in
light of the opening verse of surah
alak. Well, we know there's emphasis on
reading and writing and these are the
tools of learning. And if the first word
that was revealed to the prophetam is
or meaning that you have to to know how
to read and to write in order to gain
knowledge and to get to the sources. And
now knowledge is mashallah composed and
found in all these writings by Muslim
scholars throughout the ages and even
the sunnah is recorded. The glorious
Quran is kept and preserved. So only go
ahead and learn how to read and write
and get access to these uh sources of
information.
The second uh question is some people
dispute the idea that the prophet
sallallam was unlettered right about
this issue using the other sources. Of
course, first the glorious Quran is a
witness that the prophetam did not know
how to read nor to write before the
revelation of the glorious Quran and not
even even after that because those
people who the followers of falsehood
uh they they may have uh reason to doubt
that this is not from allahel but rather
it is from Allah because the prophetam
it was was unlettered
And heat
wasam used to even ask people to give
them to dictate to them what to write
like in in some instances where
used to write on his behalf he would say
write this this this. remember when he
wrote um the uh treaty of Alabia and
Alibab was was was uh was writing and he
said tell me where exactly because they
disagree that the prophetam was the
messenger of Allah and Ali
said I will not uh erase this this uh
this statement but the prophet said
where is it I will do it you know show
me where it is and he erased it with his
own hand. Meaning he did not even know
how to read, not even how to write, but
he just erased the word in order to let
the treaty go on and and and and u and
be completed. See, you know, even when
he uh dictated his own writings to the
kings, asking them to uh Islam, he asked
uh scribes and and writers to come and
and write for him.
So all of this showed us that the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam was
lettered and that he brought the
glorious Quran from Allahawel and he
delivered it and conveyed it to people
um in order to convey the message of
Islam, the message of learning and
knowledge.
This brings us to the end of our uh
lesson for today. Until I see you
inshallah in the coming episode, I leave
you with Allah's care and protection.
