Alhamdulillah.
In the name of Allah, the compassion,
the merciful. All praise is due to Allah
the Almighty. And may the peace and
blessings of Allah be upon his prophet
Muhammad, his family, his companions,
and his followers all until the day of
resurrection. Welcome to this new lesson
from the series of taps level four at
Zad Academy. And we are uh addressing
this uh lesson uh towards uh surah als
the surah of or time. This is a mecca
surah revealed before the hijra and uh
it is uh the ay are three and uh they
read as following after
Allahel says in this surah the meaning
of which by time indeed mankind is in
loss except for those who have believed
and done righteous deeds
and advised each other of to hold fast
to truth and advised each other to hold
fast to patience. This is
1 to3. Coming to uh the surah and the
significance of this surah it was
narrated that
came to mim the liar. You know, Musima
who used to live in Yama which is in the
middle of Arabia at that time. Uh be he
uh before became a Muslim and Musim said
to him, "What was revealed to you to
your friend in Mecca just now meaning
Muhammad wasam said to him a brief but
eloquent surah was revealed to him. He
said what is it?" He said he recited
al-Ass by time indeed mankind is in loss
except for those who have believed and
done righteous deeds and advised each
other to hold fast to truth and advised
each other to hold fast to patience. And
Musima thought of a while then he lifted
his head and said something similar to
to it has been revealed to me. Am said,
"What is it?" Mima said, "Uh,
oh hier,
oh hierrax,
you have no more than two ears and a
chest.
Oh w
trying to to do like,
you know, he's trying to imitate the
glorious Quran and the rest of you is
nothing but a feat.
That's he he made three he made up three
ayas or what looks like three verses uh
just trying to imitate the surah of als
the the hierox is a small wild animal
the size of a cat. Then he said, "What
do you think?" Oh, am said to him, "By
Allah," meaning I swear by Allah. You
know that I know that you are a liar.
And this was not a Muslim at that time.
And yet he said what he said because it
doesn't sound like uh anything
close to what Allahel says in in his
perfect uh way of the glorious Quran.
Uh said if people reflect on the surah
it will suffice them.
So this is uh how great this surah
although short in um in in length but uh
very very uh full of meanings and
showing the truth and setting criteria
for success in this life as well as in
the hereafter. Coming to the commentary
uh by time allahel swears by time within
which the actions of children of Adam
both good and bad uh take place that's
why Allah swore by time subhanahu wa
ta'ala indeed mankind is in loss mankind
is in a state of loss and doom in all
affairs in this world and in the
hereafter so that is the general
statement the wording of the of this
phrase is in loss is more emphatic than
simply saying that man is a loser. Allah
did not say a loser, he said in loss.
And that's because the word in indicates
that man is enveloped by loss. And it is
as he's sinking in loss and loss
encompasses him from all uh directions
and on all sides except for those who
have believed and done righteous deeds.
This is the exception and this is made
uh if uh from the state of of loss for
those who believe in their hearts and do
righteous deeds and actions. So they
believe in the heart and they do right
actions in um in reality with their own
limbs and and and movements and
activities. U righteous deeds include
those which meet two criteria. This is
what the scholars found from the um text
of the glorious Quran and the sunnah of
the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
First is sincerity towards Allahawel
alone and the second is following the
prophet sallall.aii
And this is found in the last ayah of
where Allah says
meaning a good righteous deed that meets
the the instructions and the and the way
and the and the path of the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam and does not
associate partners meaning to be sincere
in what he does and advised each other
to hold fast to truth. That is they
advised one another to adhere to the
truth and by means act of obedience and
worship and refraining from that which
is prohibited. So meaning to do
righteous deeds and to stop and refrain
from bad and prohibited actions and
advised each other to hold fast uh to
patience. meaning to be patient in
obeying Allah and hearing in and bearing
calamities and divine decrees and
putting up with annoyance of those who
cause annoyance among those whom they
enjoin and do not uh and do what is
right and forbid um what is wrong. So
these are three things meaning advise
one another uh to be patient. Patience
in in in
obeying Allah in refraining from uh bad
things and and and bearing all the uh
trouble and annoyance coming from the
disbelievers and those who object to
their own call to good and also to
bearing calamities and divine decrees.
So these are this is this is what
patience is is all about. Now coming to
the benefits that we learn and from
these uh from these this surah
all the children of Adam are in a state
of loss and the loss envelopes them from
all sides and of course they will be in
loss and they will not be successful uh
except when they acquire four
characteristics mentioned in this surah.
That's why Almafi
pointed out the importance of this surah
because it would be sufficient for them.
He said faith, righteous deeds, advising
one another uh to hold fast to truth and
advising one another to hold fast to
patience. So patience and truth and
faith and righteous deeds. Now uh loss
is of various levels. Loss could be uh
like an absolute in the absolute sense a
very comprehensive complete loss as for
those who lose in this dunya as well as
in the hereafter and therefore they will
be deserving hellfire. So that is a
total loss for those who are so busy
with in this life with their own whims
and desires and not following what Allah
commanded them to do. Subhanahu wa
ta'ala. Also loss could be uh partial
and in other words they they could uh be
in a state of loss but uh lose in one
way or another. So u they they they lose
partially. However, uh those who acquire
for the four characteristics
characteristics will be the ones who
will be uh winners and will be safe on
the day of judgment from any punishment.
The characteristics that will save a
person from being a loser in any way are
for and they are as we mentioned this is
more of an explanation to the points
mentioned above faith or believe in what
allahel has enjoined us to believe this
this can be faith without knowledge. It
has to be based on knowledge and uh and
knowledge and faith cannot be cannot be
complete except through knowledge. So
knowledge is number one. righteous deeds
which include good deeds uh both visible
and hidden uh having to do with rights
of Allah, the rights of of his slaves,
the people and what is obligatory, what
is uh and what is encouraged. All kinds
of righteous deeds are included in this
and advising one another to hold fast to
truth which is faith and righteous
deeds. That is urging one another and
encouraging one another to do that. So
support, urgence, encouragement, all of
this is involved in that advising,
advising one another to hold fast uh to
patience in obeying allahel, refraining
and from uh disobeying allahel and
bearing the painful decrees of Allah.
So these are the four things uh that
will qualify a person and make him
successful in this life as well as in
the hereafter. Coming to the activities
of this lesson,
which is more eloquent saying that
mankind is in loss or saying that man is
a loser? Explain that giving the reasons
why it is so. Well, we know that in loss
is more eloquent, more comprehensive
because it says in in loss meaning that
he is like enveloped by this he is um
loss is uh surrounding this person from
all sides. It's different than saying
he's a loser. So it is an more
encompassing uh word and that's why it's
more eloquent. How do we judge whether
deeds are righteous or not? Well, we
talked about the two criteria that are
mentioned in the glorious Quran and the
Sunnah which is sincerity to allahel and
um following the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam
which is sincerity and is to follow the
prophet sallallaihi wasallam in whatever
he said and to follow his own example.
What are the practical steps one may
take to attain the four characteristics
that will save a person from loss? Well,
we we we know that uh uh it is for
important is to have faith with
knowledge based on knowledge is to have
um practical steps to have knowledge
because based uh faith is based on
knowledge and to have good companions,
people who can support you and and and
uh and be be on your side to remind you
to give you support to and and to help
you and also to be in a Muslim community
because you cannot live without a Muslim
community who actually observes all the
uh good deeds and and encourage you and
help you uh to be a good a good Muslim.
And also we know that uh discipline one
needs to discipline himself and be
always alert to uh following the path of
obedience and staying away from the path
or of of disobedience of allahel and
training oneself. You know it takes time
to train oneself to be um very much uh
up to the responsibility that is uh put
on his shoulders towards allahel and to
think of because that's the way a person
can gain success. I think that is going
to that is bringing us to the end of our
lesson for today. Until I see you
inshallah in the coming lesson, I leave
you with Allah's care and protection.
amlaykum.
