Alhamdulillah.
In the name of Allah, the comparison to
the merciful. All praise is due to
Allahawel. And may the peace and
blessings of Allah be upon his prophet
Muhammad, his family, his companions,
and all of his followers until the day
of resurrection. I welcome you to this
new lesson and episode from the series
of level four at Zed Academy. Today we
are dealing with surah alas and this is
a mecca surah revealed before the hijra
surah alas or
allahel says the following after
the meaning of these verses is the
following.
Say he is Allah who is one. Allah who is
sought by all. He neither beggets nor is
begotten nor is there to him any
equivalent
for
in this surah uh alas.
Now the word las
linguistically speaking means purity not
mixing with anything different and that
surah is called because it speaks of the
oneness of Allahawel
and declares him to be the only one who
is deserving of worship. That's why it's
called alas.
So you really purify your faith in
allahel and not mix uh the worship of
Allah with anyone else but solely for
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Now the
reason for the revelation of this surah
is that it was narrated by
that the polytheists said to the
messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi
wasallam tell us about the lineage of
your lord.
So then allahel revealed the words say
he is Allah who is one Allah who is uh
sought by all.
Now coming to the virtues of this surah.
Well there are many virtues several
virtues uh for for this surah. First Abu
al
said the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam said to his companions is any
of you unable to recite onethird of the
Quran in a single night?
They felt that was too difficult for
them and they said who is among us is
able to do that oh messenger of Allah
and he said Allah
or
is equivalent to onethird of the Quran.
So uh
through
or through as as in the hadith
also
reported that the messenger of Allah
sallallahu alaihi wasallam used to
recite in w exalt the name of your lord
the most high
this is say oh disbelievers
and say he is Allah
who is one.
So in W reciting the first one, the
first
and then second one and third one
also
said the messenger of Allaham
recited in the two sunnah
before and the two sunnas
after
20 odd times or between 10 and 20 times
say oh disbelievers
and say he is Allah who is one.
So would be read in all these different
uh uh places and also uh prayers uh as
well as reading it at night. If you read
it one time, it is equivalent to reading
like third third of the Quran. Not
necessarily in reward because we will
come into the discussion of these
details. Let's come into the commentary
on this on this these verses. Say he is
Allah who is one. This is he is one
unique with no peer, no help, no helper,
no rival, none similar or equivalent to
him. Subhanahu wa ta'ala. He's unique.
He is one. Subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah
who is sought by all meaning in Arabic
as we say
whom creatures seek and turn to for
their needs. The master who has full
control of dominion is the majestic who
is perfect in majesty, the almighty. um
who is sought by all subhanahu wa ta'ala
who neither eats nor drinks. So this is
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala everyone and
everyone is in need of him and uh he's
not in need of anyone. He neither
beggets the polist polytheist Arabs said
that uh the angels were the daughters of
Allah. The Jews said is the son of
Allah. The Christians said that Isa is
the son of Allahawel. But Allah declared
them to be lying because he beggets not.
He had no children, no offspring, no one
coming as uh their his his his own sons
subhanahu wa ta'ala. Nor is he begotten
and and no one gave birth to him. That
is no one else gave birth to him. uh
this ser and equival equivocally
uh confirms that he is imposs it is
impossible for him to uh have a
progenator subhanahu wa ta'ala nor is
there to him any equivalent
he's a sovereign the creator of all
things how could he have among his
creation appear that is equal to him
subhanah wa ta'ala. So there is no no
equal to him uh exalted and sanctified
be Allah far uh above all of that. What
we learn from this uh surah is this
uh it is obligatory to declare that
allahel is far above having a spouse or
child subhanahu wa ta'ala. So he has uh
uh no uh uh wife, no child. Subhanahu wa
ta'ala. And Allah declared that clearly
and u with the very very strong
statements and and and words in
where he says subhanahu wa tala
And they say, "The most merciful has
taken for himself a son. You have done
an an an atrocious thing." The heavens
almost rupture there there from and the
earth split open and the mountains
collapse in devastation that they
attribute to be they attribute to the
most merciful a son and it is not
appropriate for the most merciful that
he should take a son. There is no one in
the heavens and earth but that he comes
to the most merciful as a servant. He
has enumerated them and counted them a
full counting
and all of them are coming to him on the
day of resurrection alone.
So that is a a strong and adamant
expression of the oneness of Allahawel
and that he has no child or spouse.
Subhanahu wa ta'ala. Also it was
narrated by Abu that the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam said Allah
says the son of Adam disbelieved me and
had no right to do so.
and
and he reviled me and had no right to do
so. As for reviling me,
it is his saying, "Allah has begotten a
son while I am the one who is sought by
all. I begott not, nor was I begotten,
and there is none like unto me. U the
rest of the hadith in Arabic.
So look at this expression even by the
hadith and even this hadith where
allahel says this meaning by the
expression of the prophet sallallahu
alaihi
wasallam also uh number two
uh the negation of beginning uh is
mentioned before the negation of being
begotten. He neither begets nor is
begotten. Why did he say
first? He um beggets not. He neither
begets
nor is begotten. Why did he do that?
Well, the reason is uh very important.
The followers of misguidance actually
attributed offspring to Allahawel but
they did not attribute a progenator to
him. So they said he did not have like a
father but he had a son. This indicates
that the one who was begotten or born
such as Isa or Jesus peace be upon him
cannot be
divine cannot be a god. That's why it is
so wrong and so
ungrateful and rejectful of allahel to
say that he has a son and you should
worship his son like you you worship you
you worship you you worship his father.
So that is that is the reason why it is
uh important to have this first uh the
negation of uh having him um or be
having him to beget a son.
Thirdly
said in
his book of the scholars are unanimously
agreed that if someone recite say he is
Allah who's one if you say
three times. The reward for this is not
equal to the reward of one who says or
stays up at night and recite the entire
Quran. So in other words, uh you cannot
say equal in in terms of of the rewards
or in terms of like the time spent in
reciting the whole of the Quran. When
you say it's equal to onethird of the
Quran, it means in in in
status in in in
the uh meaning but not necessarily in
the reward nor is it the time that you
spend in reciting the surah which can
take only uh uh less than a minute to
recite.
You cannot make that equal to reciting
the whole Quran at night.
Allah also said it is not equivalent to
the one-third of the Quran but it cannot
take the place it is equivalent to
onethird of the Quran but it cannot take
the place of one-third of the Quran.
meaning it cannot replace it. Based on
that fact that if a person repeats three
times in an obligatory prayer, that does
not mean that he cannot he can omit al
fat. You have to read al fat which is
part of what you read from the Quran in
your uh salah but you cannot just recite
three times and that means it you cover
everything in the glorious Quran. So it
it should be clear now that uh it's not
equal in that sense. All right. Now
coming to the activities here uh list
the situations
uh in which it is mentioned in the
sunnah that one should recite alas. We
talked about that already. It's about
after the circumulation of the of thea
and this is not mentioned by the way in
the curriculum. Also the sunnah of and
the sunnah of sunnah of fud before and
sunnah of is after and also the last
init which is sunnah to read alas uh
list the uh in detail the divine
attributes that are mentioned in surah
alas. Well, there are many Allah which
is talking about
which is servitude and and worship of
Allah
which is he's one only subhanahu wa
ta'ala he is uh the one that is uh that
all uh people are uh coming to him for
help and and need and he does not need
anyone. He has uh gotten he he neither
begets nor is begotten. So he he has no
no father and he has no children.
There is uh no uh
someone equivalent or rival uh or
similar to him subhanahu wa'ta'ala. So
uh the phrase he neither beggets is a
reputation of three groups. The first
group is like the Christians who claim
that Jesus is the son of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala. The second group is the Jews
who claim that is the son of Allahel.
Thirdly, this third group is uh is the
polytheists who claim that angels are
the daughters of Allah. Why is the
negation of uh be getting uh mentioned
before the negation of being begotten?
Well, we already talked about that and
we said because of the many of the
misguided people like the Christians,
the Jews and the polytheist uh said uh
like we we mentioned above that he
allahel had a son or daughters but
Allahel
they did not claim that he had a
progenator. So that is the idea why it
came first. All right, that brings us to
the end of our lesson for today. Until
we meet inshallah in the coming lesson,
I leave you with Allah's care and
protection.
