Kind: captions Language: en [Music] But for [Music] vows are different than oaths though there is some sort of similarities to vow or to take a vow is to compel yourself linguistically to compel yourself to do or not to do something but in the legislative and Islamic terminology it is to commit oneself self and to make oneself accountable by obliging yourself to do or not to do something that the Sharia did not oblige you to do or not to do. And this is why it is not recommended to take a vow. General vows is not recommended. The prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam forbade people from taking ba vows and he said they do not change anything rather they get something out of the miser what does that mean if I need something from Allah usually I don't give charity but if I need something desperately oh Allah cure my child from this illness and if you cure my child, I'll slaughter a sheep and give it for the poor. This is not something that Allah will do in exchange for your ram that you want to sacrifice and give to the poor. But it because you're a miser, you oblige yourself to do this. And whenever Allahel whether cures or not cures, it's up to his divine will. you will do that. And the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam also said that a vow does not bring anything forward or put it back. Rather the vow gets something out of the miser. A vow only gets something out of the mean person. And all of these a hadith tells you that it is not something that is recommended in Islam because you're obliging yourself to do something that Islam did not oblige you to do. You're burdening yourself and you're making things hard for you. The default is that you do good things without the need of something. So don't set a condition so that you feel that you're bargaining with Allahel. Allah if you do this to me I'm going to perform Hajj or I'm going to feed 10 poor people if you do this to me. So this is why the vows generally speaking are not recommended. General vows for the sake of Allahawel once done it is complimented and praiseworthy to fulfill it. And this is what allahel says in the Quran that those who fulfill their vows after they've committed themselves to doing it but before committing no don't do it. Allah does not love this or like this. And it's also important to learn that vows must be verbalized. Mere intentions are not binding. A lot of the people think that if they intended to do something, they have to fulfill it. No, it has to be verbalized and it has to be with using words that insuate that you're compelling yourself to do this such as it's a vow upon me. It's for Allahawel upon me to do this and that. I promise allahel I pledge to allahel if he were to cure my sick child that I would do this and that. So if there is no verbalization, if the words are not insinuating, it's not telling you that this is something compelling and forced upon you, then it's not a vow. Also we have to learn that whenever we use the word inshallah if Allah is willing this this cancels any obligation. So if I say it's a vow upon me to slaughter a sheep if Allahawel cures my child inshallah this saying inshallah is cancelling any obligation whether it's in a vow or it's an oath wall I will not come tomorrow inshallah and I do I don't have to experate because I used the word inshallah and whatever Allah w then I'm not obliged to do that. What are the categories of vows? The scholars divided the categories into five. One of them being to make a vow in an act of worship such as to make a vow to perform Hajj or to fast a day. In this case, it is mandatory upon you to fulfill your vow. Allah says, "And let them fulfill their vows." And the prophet says, "Asam, whoever vows to do an act of obedience to Allah, let him obey him." So this is mandatory when you vow to worship Allahel. Number two, to make a vow to commit a sin and definitely committing sins is prohibited. So it is not permissible to fulfill such a vow and this would be illogical to make such a vow because vows are to do an act of obedience to Allah. So you say I vow to drink wine or I vow to uh uh skip salat for two weeks. The prophet says, "Whoever vows to disobey Allahel, he must not disobey Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala." What to do then? As in the case of oaths, he has to expedate that. Feeding 10 poor people or clothing them or freeing a slave. And if he's unable to do any of those financially, then he has to fast three days. The third type of vows is the general vow. A general vow is something you don't mention a specific thing with. So you say it's a vow on me to allahel. Yes. To do what? And he doesn't say to fast, to perform Hajj, to give charity, to pray 10 raqas. He just says it's a vow upon me to Allah or I vow to Allah. If this is the case, the prophet said, "Whoever says a vow without naming it, he has to expedate as they do for the oaths." again feeding or clothing 10 poor people or freeing a slave and if not possible then fasting three days. The fourth type of vows are the vows when arguing or when in anger and this is known as or these are usually made in anger or to prevent oneself from doing something or to oblige oneself to do something. So this takes the same ruling as an oath. I say it's a vow on me. If I speak to Ahmed, I will perform Hajj. I don't want to perform Hajj. I'm saying this to prevent myself from speaking to Ahmed or if I don't do the following things I will fast for a whole year and in this case the ruling is the same as when you take an oath and this is the most authentic opinion. When you make such a vow, then you have to uh uh either fulfill it and if you don't fulfill it, you have the right to expedate it by feeding or dressing 10 poor people or freeing a slave. And financially, if you're unable, you will fast have to fast three uh days. The fi the fifth category of vows is the permissible vow. And these vows like the oaths over permissible things. For example, uh um to take a vow that you will wear some certain types of clothes or to ride a car or a bicycle. And this is something that you have the choice either to fulfill it or to expedate it. And this is what the hadiths and the evidences dictate. Now bearing in mind that taking a vow is a form of worship. So it must not be to other than Allahawel. You cannot take a vow for an idol or for someone who is deceased or the likes because that would be shik. And whoever does this must not fulfill it because that is a thing that would breach his Islam and this is the consensus of all scholars. Now what is the ruling if someone says I pledge to Allahawel to do this or I promise Allah that I will do so and so. scholars differed because they say that this pledge or promise is different than a vow which is another. So they made a distinction and said if a person pledges or promises Allah to do something or an act of obedience, an act of worship, then he has to fulfill it. such as I promise allahel if this or that happens I will perform Hajj or I will fast six days or I will pray a week night prayers for half an hour a night. This is an act of worship and obedience. He has to fulfill this. But if it was pledging Allahawel, I promise allahel to perform Hajj. This is an act of worship. I pledge to Allah to fast every Mondays and Thursday and Thursday. This is an act of worship. You have to fulfill it. But if I say I promise allahel to go to the beach or to drive my my my friends around the neighborhood or to go shopping. These are permissible things. So this would not be an a pledge or a vow. It would be an oath. And whether you do it or if you wish you can expedate it and allahel knows best. [Music] to Foreign speech. Foreign speech. Foreign speech. [Music]
