There is a chapter in the books of
or Jewish prudent that deals with foods.
And this is a wide
chapter because
is the plural of
and it includes whatever we consume.
foods, vegetables, meat, drinks,
and there are things that are halal and
there are things that are definitely
haram.
The default
and this is the beauty of Islam.
If you come to list
what is halal,
it would take us all our lives.
The beauty of Islam is that it reverses
it and it tells you what is haram.
So the default would be everything
on earth is halal for you except for the
following. So everything, food, drinks
is halal except what is mentioned to be
haram or what is harmful
or what is by nature something that is
mentioned or abhor to mankind.
Allahel says in the Quran, "Oh mankind,
eat from whatever is on earth that is
lawful and good." And Allah also says in
the Quran,
then eat of what Allah has provided for
you which is lawful and good.
So this is the main theme of whatever we
would like to eat.
And when you have whispers of shan
coming to you, oh this is this might be
haram. This might be something that is
not lawful.
Use the default rule. Everything is
halal till proven otherwise.
And there's no harm in investigating and
trying to find what is the ruling. But
don't be obsessed by it because then
shan would utilize this to his
advantage. Always remember that allahel
has said he has explained in detail to
you what he has forbidden
you except that is accepting that to
which you are compelled. So Allah has
detailed to us what is haram
and even that haram becomes permissible
at times of necessity.
Now when we come to discuss the types of
food, the types of food
generally speaking are two types. Either
it is vegetarian
or non-vegetarian.
So the vegetarian type is anything that
is grown on earth such as trees uh um
grass, wheat, um corn, uh um and the
likes, the grains and and the likes. And
all of this is under the main ayah that
says, "Oh mankind, eat from whatever is
on earth that is lawful and good." Allah
has given us that to be halal. However,
the exception is anything that is
harmful for you, this is haram.
Why? You just said that everything is
halal by default. Yes, but Allah says in
the Quran, "And do not throw yourselves
with your own hands into destruction."
Meaning, don't kill yourselves. So if
someone sees a poisonous
plant
and he's he knows that if he eats from
this he's going to die or he's going to
fall sick and he intentionally eats it
that's prohibited
because this is going to kill you. Also
anything that
impacts your sanity
would be considered to be haram.
Anything that hampers your decision
making would intoxicate you.
So we grow grapes and grapes is halal
for us to eat. But if we turn it into
wine and it intoxicates us, this becomes
haram. You can't use the rule of default
that everything is halal that is grown
on earth. No. If you smoke weed or hash
or marijuana or the likes and you say
it's grown on earth like one of them uh
uh uh
yeah any sinful people would joke about
it and they said hashish or hash if it's
haram we're burning it and if it's halal
we're smoking it.
This is haram. The prophet said clearly
sallallahu alaihi wasallam every
intoxicant is
and every intoxicant is haram.
Is whatever that covers your um sanity
and and and decision making and hampers
it. So this is the first part vegetarian
food.
Non-vegetarian food is divided into two
types. Either it is creatures that live
on
water and depends in living in water. It
cannot live without it which also
includes amphibians because they can
live sometime on land and sometimes on
water but they cannot live entirely on
land. So these
what is known as sea creatures
such as living in seas, oceans, lakes,
rivers, it is halal generally speaking
because Allahawel said about when he
mentioned subhana wa ta'ala salt water
and sweet water like rivers and lakes
then Allah said and from each you eat
tender meat
and Allah is also mentioning in the
Quran that it is lawful to you is game
from the sea and its food as provisions
for you. So allahel made this halal for
us to consume. And in the hadith when
travelers
who travel by sea they were confused
when it came to
the water they should perform wudoo
with. They thought that the water they
carried which was sweet water would run
out in couple of days if they use for
woodoo and they had to travel for days
in sea. So they asked the prophet what
to do not knowing that they can perform
wudoo with sea water. So the prophet
saidatam
its water is a means of purification.
Sweet water, salt water, any type of
water you sail on, it's means of
purification.
And it's dead meat. That which is
dead meat usually is a reference to
a ram a cow that is not slaughtered and
we will come to discuss this that dies
in unislamic way this considered dead
meat not just haram we can't consume
however for sea creatures or creatures
that live in water it's dead meat which
definitely we don't slaughter
is permissible. So even if we find a
fish flowing on the sea, we can take it
and eat it. Though it died of natural
causes, but this does not have any
impact on us unless it is a harmful
thing. Unless this sea creature or this
dead fish that was flowing I know if I
eat it I'm gonna suffer or get poisoned
or die because of that then it becomes
haram but the default it is halal.
The second type of such animals are the
land animals.
And according to the verses that we've
read earlier, it is halal because it's
lawful and good. Now there are
certain animals
that we are not permitted to eat
for different reasons.
And alhamdulillah Quran and the Sunnah
had told us
what not to eat. So firstly
pig.
So swine meat the flesh of pig is
totally prohibited. Allah states in the
Quran prohibited to you
are dead animals
blood and the flesh of swine. And this
was repeated a lot in the Quran. So we
know that eating
pork flesh or swine flesh, ham is out of
the question for Muslims.
Likewise,
the meat of domestic donkeys, normal
donkeys, I'm not talking about wild
donkeys. Zebras are fine to eat,
but domestic donkeys, it was permissible
to consume their meat until the seventh
year of Hijra, known as the year of
where the prophet announced to thematam
that such meat of donkeys is totally
prohibited and haram.
Secondly,
it is prohibited
to eat from the land animals whatever
has fangs
among the animals such as lions, tigers,
cheetahs,
monkeys,
and also birds that have talents
because they eat on flesh.
and they are predators.
And the hadith stated that the prophet
sallallaihi wasallam forbade every wild
animal that has fangs and every bird
that has talons.
And this reason is understandable.
Some scholars went even further to
indicate how such predators,
if you consume their meat, you would
have the same characteristics
and anger issues and the will to
be a predator yourself.
Thirdly,
animals that Sharia instructed us to
kill. animals or insects or uh uh ravens
and these are mentioned in a
so there are five vermin which are to be
killed as the prophet said
even if you find them in the haram
imagine the sanctuary of the masid in
Mecca the haram
which is prohibited
to
even frighten
the pigeons and the game. It's not
permissible to hunt or to kill a game.
There in that most sacred place, these
vermans that are
bad, aggressive, harmful, the prophet
order us to kill them. And he mentioned
among them the uh um the mouse, the
scorpion,
um the kites, it's a a bird that looks
like a hawk, the crows, and the vicious
dogs with rebes.
So this is something that Sharia
ordered us to kill and whatever the
Sharia ordered us to kill it becomes
haram for us to consume.
Also is included
are snakes because we ordered to kill
snakes as well. all types of snakes.
And it is haram either because it's
poisonous and if you consume it, you
might die because of its poison or
because it feeds on insects on on bad
things that are uh uh harmful for us.
Among the things that we the Sharia uh
told us not to consume
are things that we are ordered not to
kill.
So there are certain things that we're
not permitted permitted to kill. Hence
we're then ordered not to consume
because if you can't kill it with this
means that you cannot eat it. How can
you how are you going to eat it without
killing it? And the hadith of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam that
states that he forbade killing of four
creatures ants, bees, hoopus and
shrikes and this is a kind of a um a
bird. So these things that also are
prohibited for us to um
kill. Hence it is prohibited to consume.
And in your textbooks you'll find that
they have mentioned that hedgehogs
hedgehogs are permitted to eat. And I
don't know why they chose this from all
kind of animals but most likely because
it was mentioned in the books of so
people would think how is it possible if
it is slaughtered as a as an a land
animal if you get a chance to slaughter
it then you can eat it. Although there
is a difference of opinion among uh
scholars but generally speaking it is
halal till proven otherwise.
