Among virus that can affect our heart
that is very dangerous,
and even the most dangerous one,
among all other virus,
that does not only affect demons,
that does not only affect مجرمين
the sinners,
and affects some Muslims.
This chronic virus
is arrogance,
that can bring
very bad impact.
In one hadith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ
فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ
A person will not enter the Heaven
if he has arrogance in his heart,
even though it is as small as dzarrah.
A man asked him,
“O Messenger of Allah, a man likes to wear
beautiful clothes, beautiful shoes.”
And the Apostle ﷺ said,
“Allah is Beautiful,
and loves beauty.”
"But الْكِبْرُ,
But arrogance means rejecting the truth,
and despising other people.
Dear Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you,
Arrogance prevents one
from entering the Heaven.
Even though this arrogance
is as small as dzarrah.
And dzarrah, in Arabic,
has several meanings.
One is small ant.
If we put a small ant
on a scale,
its weight is so little.
Almost zero.
Another meaning of dzarrah,
is when one put his hand
on earth, and he cleans
the earth from his hands,
and there remains few
on his hand.
If we pick one of this remain,
that is dzarrah.
Another meaning of dzarrah is
when one open the window,
and light comes in,
he can see small particles.
That is dzarrah.
If we put them on the scale,
we cannot feel
its weight.
If one has arrogance,
as little as that, it can prevent him
from entering the Heaven.
Even more, if this pride
in his heart is as big as stone.
As big as a mountain, and moreover
if his chest is full of pride.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked
about pride,
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ explained
the impact or the signs of pride.
The Apostle ﷺ said,
Arrogance means rejecting the truth,
and despising other people,
despises mankind.
Today,
we will focus on...
... the characteristics of arrogant people
that is despising other people.
Despising mankind.
Hence, if one finds in himself
that he is likely to despise people,
that he is likely to insult others
that he likes to despise others,
know that this is a proof,
the biggest and the most real indicator,
that his heart has been affected
by the virus of arrogance.
Thus, he needs to be alert.
In another hadith from
Iyâz İbni Hımâr
He said,
One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood
in front of us and preached,
and he said:
The Apostle ﷺ said,
“Allah had asked me,
Allah had revealed to me
that you should be humble.
That you should not
despise each other.
Do not consider yourself better
than others.
And do not do harm
to others.
It is clear that among the signs
of being humble,
is that one shall not feel
that he feels great, better than others.
He shall respect other people.
In one hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
also said,
“A Muslim is a brother/sister
to other Muslims."
“Then if he is a brother/sister
to other Muslims,
he shall not do harm
to his brothers/sisters.
Nor he shall leave his brothers/sisters
when they need help.”
Then the Apostle ﷺ said,
"وَلاَ يَحْقِرُهُ"
“He shall not despise
his brothers/sisters.”
And the Apostle ﷺ said,
" التَّقْوَى هَاهُنَا"
“The fear [to Allah] is here.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed
on his chest three times.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“The Fear of Allah is here.
The Fear of Allah is here.
The Fear of Allah is here.”
And the Apostle ﷺ said,
“One is said
to do bad deeds,
if he despise
other Muslim brothers/sisters.
The whole of a Muslim is inviolable
for another Muslim.
“They shall not shed
their brothers’ blood.
“They shall not take
their brothers’ property.”
And they shall not despise
their brothers’ self-esteem.”
My dear Muslims, may Allah bless you.
When the Apostle ﷺ said,
"َلاَ يَحْقِرُهُ"
“A Muslim shall not
despise other Muslims.”
And the Apostle ﷺ said,
"التقوى هاهنا"
“The fear of Allah is in the heart.”
What did the Apostle ﷺ mean?
There are two interpretations here.
The first interpretation.
As if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reminded us,
“Why would you underestimate others?
“Why would you despise others?”
“While the barometer
for Allah is fear [to Allah].”
“The fear [to Allah] is in the heart.”
“No one knows what others’ heart is,
except Allah SWT.”
“You despise him? Do you
fear Allah SWT more than him?”
“Perhaps you see
his apparent deeds.”
“But you do not know
what is in his heart.”
“It is possible that his apparent deeds
are less than yours.”
“But he is sincerer,
and far from being arrogant.”
“But he fears Allah SWT more than him.”
“But he fears Allah SWT more.”
Since one cannot judge
what is in others’ heart,
then he shall not judge
others less than him.
In one hadith,
A man passed by the Apostle ﷺ,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked
to a companion sitting beside him.
The Apostle ﷺ said:
"ما رأيك في هذا؟"
“What do you think
about the person who just passed by?”
This companion said,
“This person is very rich
in the community, and well respected.”
Then he said,
“By Allah, this person,”
if he asks for a lady's hand,
he ought to be given her in marriage;
If he intercedes (for someone),
his intercessor would be accepted;
When he speaks,
he will be heard.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not say anything
hearing his companion's comment.
Another man passed by
in front of them.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked
to his companion.
“What do you think
about the second person?”
The companion said,
He is poor,
If he asks for a lady's hand in marriage,
he will be rejected.
If he intercedes (for someone),
his intercessor would be rejected;
When he speaks, surely no one
will listen to him.
And what did the Apostle ﷺ say?
The Apostle ﷺ said, “the second person
is better than the first one.”
“Shall the earth be full
with people like the first man.”
the second person is still much better.”
Thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
wanted to remind us.
We shall not judge others
from the material aspect.
Often, we use material aspect to judge others.
If he is rich, have a position, and is famous,
we respect him.
We do not dare to be irrespective.
While that is not the barometer
used by Allah SWT.
Allah SWT said,
The noblest person
by Allah’s side,
is those who fear Allah SWT
the most among you.
Since we do not know
about one’s fear [to Allah],
we shall never
despise other people.
And the Apostle ﷺ said,
The fear [to Allah] is in the heart and
you never know what is in others’ heart.
This is the first interpretation.
The second interpretation,
when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "لاَ يَحْقِرُهُ"
“A Muslim shall not despise
other Muslims.
The fear [to Allah] is in the heart.
The signs from the Apostle ﷺ,
“If you like
to despise others,
to humiliate others,
to critisize,
irrespective toward others,
to look down on others,
know that you have problem
with your fear [to Allah].
There is something wrong with your heart.
How do you fear Allah SWT
and you despise others?”
When one despises others,
that means that his heart is infected
by a very dangerous virus.
That is arrogance
and pride.
Hence, Allah said in
the Quran, in surah Al Humazah,
Allah SWT said:
“Beware to every (kind of) slanderer,
who likes to criticize and humiliate.
Then, Allah mentioned
about Hell.
Allah SWT said,
“Hell burns humans’ hearts.”
Some scholars explained,
“Those who like to slanderer,
humiliate, critisize...
... must have had problems
with their heart."
This is a strong indication that
his heart is full of arrogance and conceit.
My dear Muslims,
May Allah SWT bless you.
Among the characters of hypocrites are
are those who like to humiliate and taunt...
... and despise others’ good deeds.
Allah SWT said,
Allah SWT said,
“Those who criticize the contributors
among the believers concerning [their] charities,
When there is a believer who gives charity,
they taunt them.
And [criticize] the ones who find nothing
[to spend] except their effort.
This verse was about the hypocrites
when there were some companions...
... who gave charity in big amount,
they said, “They want to show off.”
“He gave a lot
because he want to show off.”
When the companions gave little,
they commented.
“Allah does not need that little.
What would be the benefit with that few?”
They only despise others’ good deeds.
Thus, one shall be careful,
as to not have hypocrites’ characteristics.
That he is likely to despise others,
talk bad about others
When others do a few good deeds,
we shall respect them.
When others do something for the good
of Islam, we shall respect them.
We shall not underestimate them,
talk bad about them.
We shall not be blinded
with our condition.
When one gives preach
and many attend his preach,
that does not mean the preacher is better
than the one whose attendees are a few.
It is possible that the preacher with
fewer attendees is more sincere than...
... the one whose attendees are
more in numbers.
Some donate a few,
and we do not a lot.
We do not see them little.
It is possible that the fewer donation
was more sincere.
In one hadith, the Apostle ﷺ said,
1 Dirham beats 100,000 Dirhams.
It is possible that the fewer donation
is more valuable by Allah’s side...
... than the bigger donation.
My dear Muslims, may Allah bless you.
Know this.
Arrogance does not show in appearance.
It is possible that one has beautiful clothes
but he is not arrogant.
As mentioned in the beginning,
when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that
“A person will not enter the Heaven,
if in his heart, there is arrogance
even if it is as small as dzarrah."
And one said,
“O Messenger of Allah, a man likes
to wear beautiful clothes."
“A man likes to wear beautiful shoes.
Is that arrogance?”
The Apostle ﷺ said,
“Allah is Beautiful,
and loves beauty.”
“Arrogance is,”
rejects the truth,
and despises other people.
Perhaps, one wears beautiful clothes,
his car is lovely, rich, but not arrogant.
He is a low profile person
and respectful toward others.
He does not insult others,
close with the poor.
And there might be people who are poor,
and look humble,
but his heart is full of arrogance.
Is there that kind of people? Yes, there is.
The Apostle ﷺ said,
There are three to whom
Allah SWT will not speak,
who will not be sanctified by Allah SWT,
and to whom Allah will not look at.
Andthere is tormenting punishment for them.
Among others, the Apostle ﷺ said,
“Someone who is poor but arrogant.
Then, a person who fears Allah SWT,
but he likes to
despise and disgrace others,
often humiliates others, know that
his heart is infected with arrogance.
Behold, because arrogance
is the demon’s character.
And Hell is the place for
arrogant people.
Allah SWT said about hell,
wretched is the residence of the arrogant.
Arrogant people
are disgraced by Allah SWT,
when they are resurrected
in the Judgment Day,
The Apostle ﷺ said,
On the Day of Rising,
the proud will be gathered
like specks in the form of men.
Abasement will envelop them on every side.
When they were alive, they felt above all,
they felt great,
better, proud of
what they do,
and on the Judgment Day,
Allah will disgrace them.
Allah despises them, lessens them,
Allah will make them small.
This is a retaliation of what
they do when they are living.
