Time is gold. In Islam, time is more valuable than gold, than money. When we lose our money, gold, silver, property ... ... we can still find them again. And we can have them even more. But when we lose our time, we won’t have it back. Hence, Allah swears a lot with time in many verses. It is a form of appraisal of time. Among others, Allah SWT said ... “Indeed, mankind is in loss.” اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ “Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds.” وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ “And advised each other to truth ... ... and advised each other to patience.” وَالْعَصْرِۙ "By Time." In another interpretation: “By Time of Asr.” As also mentioned in another verse. Allah swears. وَالضُّحٰىۙ "By the morning brightness." In another verse: وَالْفَجْرِۙ "By the dawn." In another verse: وَالَّيْلِ "By the night." In another verse: وَالنَّهَارِ "By the day." All these verses show that time is important. Because time is when a person performs righteous deeds in this world. So that he can obtain the reward in the Hereafter. Allah said: وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ خِلْفَةً لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًا “And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession.” For what? لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًا “For those who want to learn.” In another interpretation: “For whoever desires remember Allah SWT.” Or whoever desires gratitude to Allah SWT. Time to remember Allah. Time to say Allah’s name. And the Apostle ﷺ also reminded us. اِغْتَنِمْ خَمْسًا قَبْلَ خَمْسٍ “Make use of five things before the other five come.” Among others, the Apostle ﷺ said: فَرَاغَكَ قَبْلَ شَغْلِكَ “Your free time, before your busy time comes.” Many people squander with two blessings. “Two blessings which many people squander.” الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ “Good health and free time.” Therefore, the companions paid really attention to their time. Ibnu Masud RA said: مَا نَدِمْتُ على شيءٍ ﻧﺪﺃﻣة ﻋﻠﻰ ﻳﻮﻡ ﻏﺮﺑﺖ شَمْسَهُ ﻧﻘﺺ ﻓﻴﻪ ﺃﺟﻠﻲ ﻭﻠﻡ ﻳﺰﺩ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻋﻤﻠﻲ “Nothing I regret most... ... than to regret a day ... ... where the sun has set ... ... while I am closer to death, and my deeds are stagnant.” He also said: إني لأمقت الرجل أَرَاهُ فَارِغًا لَا فِي أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَاهُ وَلَا فِي أَمْرِ اُخْرَهُ “I hate to see a person with no activity.” “Neither something to do with this world nor with the Hereafter.” Al Hasan Al Bashir rahimahullah said: يا ابن آدم إنما أنت أيام فإذا ذهب يوم ذهب بعضك و إذا ذهب بعضك أن يذهب كلك “O children of Adam! Verily you are a construction of days.” “When a day passes, part of you goes away.” “And when part of you goes, I am worried that you will be gone.” And it is true. Our age is a collection of days. When days and months pass ... ... years pass ... know that we are getting closer to Allah SWT. We are going away from the world, and getting closer to the Hereafter. Look at Syeikh Abdurrahman ibn Nasir as-Sa'di rahimahullahu ta'ala. He pays really attention to time. When he sees people having a discussion at night ... Conversing with no purpose. He said: “If only I could buy your time, I would do it.” Because he feels that he lacks of time to worship Allah. He lacks of time to remember Allah. He lacks of time to express his gratitude to Allah SWT. We are in an era ... ... where we receive a guest. He has come to all of us. He has missed no one. In the past, he did not exist. This guest is the Internet. With all of his variants and models. YouTube, Facebook. Twitter, Instagram, Telegram. WhatsApp and others. And Internet has taken our time. In one hand, Internet is a favor from Allah SWT. We have created relations. We have been facilitated by Internet. Thanks to Internet, it is easier for us to connect with people. We can sell and shop online. We can preach easily. We can obtain knowledge easily via Internet. But on the other hand, Internet is a calamity. A calamity that gets many people. Internet takes their time without giving any use. It is not only time consuming. It does not only take one’s time, but it takes others’ time. This is saddening. A person does not only waste his time. He even invites others to waste their time. And it is not only that. Internet brings calamity for everyone. How could it not be? When a Muslim wakes up ... ... before he even says the morning prayer ... ... he turns on his mobile. Looking at news. Taking a look at his mails, his chat, in his mobile. No time to remember Allah SWT. How many couples being in one room ... ... on one bed ... ... but each is occupied with their mobile. Each one laughs and jokes. But not with his/her partner, but with their mobile. How many children are given a mobile by their parents? They are getting far from their parents. They are occupied with their mobiles. Getting far from their parents. They prefer being embraced by their mobile than by their parents. How many people do not recite a prayer before they sleep? They are rather occupied with news & chats that are not necessarily useful for them. Their time is wasted for these things. And they forget to remember Allah SWT. What is more saddening, Internet does not affect only common people. It affects also people who are considered righteous. Or even righteous people. And even some preachers. Some share all of their activities. They share all of their religious activities. Just to get a like from their followers. No religious activities that they hide. Charity, hajj, umrah, preach, he shares them all. Doing good to his parents, he shares it. Being romantic to his wife, he shares it. Meanwhile, the Apostle ﷺ said: مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَكُوْنَ لَهُ خَبْءٌ مِنْ عَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ “Whosoever amongst you who can hide his righteous deeds ... ... then do it. The Apostle ﷺ praised a person who gives charity but hides it. رجل تصدق بصدقة فأخفاها حتى لا تعلم شماله ما تنفق يمينه A person who will be shaded on the Day of Resurrection ... ... when the sun is an inch away ... Where the sun is an inch away from the Earth ... ... there will be a person who is shaded by Allah SWT. The Apostle ﷺ said: “A person who gives charity with his right hand.” The sun is a mile away from the Earth. A man who gives charity so secretly with his right hand ... ... that his left hand does not know what he has given. It affects also people who are righteous. Some of them ... When someone praises him, he mentions it on his social media. X has praised him. X has flattered him. What is his intention? Some of them rush to analyze an issue. National issue, a big issue. While this issue is not easy to analyze. It needs a lot of data. It needs to be discussed to understand it well. And they give their opinion easily, analyzing it, and disseminate it ... ... in the virtual world where many read him. My fellow Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you. We shall not be trapped with the defamation caused by Internet. That it gives us more harm than benefits. My fellow Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you. Verily, time is a favor. We will be accountable for this time before Allah. How do we use our time? The Apostle ﷺ said: لاَ تَزُولُ قَدَمَا عَبْدٍ حَتَّى يُسْأَلَ عَنْ أربع “The feet of the slave of Allah ... ... shall not move on the Day of Judgment ... ... until he is asked about four things.” Among others: عَنْ عُمْرِهِ فِيمَا أَفْنَاهُ "About his lifespan and how he spent it." About his time, where he spents his time. Today, people like to comment. Meanwhile, comments, whether they are said or written ... ... are the same things and will be recorded by the angels. Many people, in real world, do not has the gut to comment. But in the virtual world, he writes everything. He forgets that what he writes is the same thing as what he says. The Apostle ﷺ said: و إن العبد ليتكلم بالكلمة من سخط الله , لا يلقي لها بالا يهوي بها في جهنم “One speaks a word ... ... displeasing to Allah without considering it of any importance ... ... and for this reason he will sink down into Hell." People do not pay attention when they comment on things. They spread hoax, They spread lies. That these lies are spread all around the world. Sometimes they violate another person’s honor. With lies. And the person is insulted by many people. While he is the one who lies. This will make him sink down into Hell. This is scary. He does not care. Meanwhile, his utterances and comments will be held accountable to Allah SWT. معاشر المسلمين With Internet ... ... when we open an account. Be it Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Telegram. Know that we are opening a gate of reckoning for us. The more accounts we create ... ... the more there are for reckoning by Allah SWT. If we are not clever enough to use the account for goodness .... ... it will add more suffering to us on the Day of Resurrection. One would surf on his account. And he opens others’ account. What for? He is wasting his time. He sees other people's disgrace. Moreover, he gives his comments. His reckoning will be difficult on the Day of Judgment. Allah SWT will hold him accountable for what he sees. Allah SWT will hold him accountable for what he hears. Allah SWT will hold him accountable for what he says. إِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولَئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْؤُولاً “Indeed, the hearing, the sight ... ... and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned. Hence, we shall have fear to Allah SWT. Do not use our mobile unless to do things that are approved by Allah SWT. Do not let our mobile make us forget to tie the knot of relationship. We face our mobile everyday. We call and chat with many people but do not have time to call our mother. We do not have time to visit our parents. We do not have time to call our siblings. And finally, we cut our relations because of our mobile. We are busy with our chatting. Days go by without us reading the Quran. It shows that Internet and mobiles are really of a disaster for us. We pray that Allah forgives our sins.
