And in the past many
scholars finally ...
... developed their knowledge
and formed a separate school.
There were Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik,
Imam Shafi'i, Imam Ahmad.
There were Zhufar, Abu Tsaur.
Sofyanan, and others.
Each had their own
school of thought.
There was Isa bin Rahuyah.
They had their own school.
But, their school did not develop.
Because there were no students,
they did not develop their knowledge.
Whereas in those days,
they were all separate schools.
Therefore Imam Tirmidzi quoted a lot
from them in his Sunnah.
Imam Tirmidhi said for example
"This hadith was practiced by ...
He mentioned the scholars:
Malik, Shafi'i, for example.
Isaac bin Rohuya.
He mentioned the schools
of Islam that existed at that time.
But nowadays there are no more,
then 4 famous schools.
But they never taught
to only follow one school.
Therefore, Imam Shafi'i
who had studied with Imam Malik ...
... did not taqlid to Imam Malik.
And Imam Shafi'i developed his own school
known as Shafi'ite School.
Imam Ahmad who learned from Imam Shafi'i
did not taqlid to Imam Shafi'i.
And he, himself, developed his own School,
known as Hambali School.
Thus, it is not true when one says
that one should join one school.
It is not mandatory because even them
did not make it mandatory.
But we cannot deny
these schools of thought.
Mazhab is important, it is like a
school.
We study religion.
No problem if one studies religion,
fiqh through the Shafi'ite school.
Nor it is a problem to learn fiqh
through Hambali School.
What is forbidden is taqlid.
