Hence, religious study is a very noble science. The object of its study is the rules of Allah SWT. It is even more noble when ... ... the object studied is the names and the characters of Allah SWT. Therefore, the knowledge that is the most useful for a servant in his life... ... is the knowledge on the names and the characters of Allah SWT. وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى “Verily Allah SWT has the most beautiful names.” Among Allah SWT's names, the most beautiful one is Al Halim. Al Halim would mean that Allah SWT ... ... does not give immediately punishment to His servant when he does sinful acts. Or when His servant is a disbeliever, or associates Allah to others. But Allah SWT postpones the sentence for them. But Allah SWT postpones the punishment for them. Who knows? They might come to realize and return to Allah SWT. While in fact, it is easy for Allah SWT to punish them. Allah SWT said, وَلَوْ يُؤَاخِذُ اللَّهُ النَّاسَ بِظُلْمِهِمْ مَا تَرَكَ عَلَيْهَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ وَلَكِنْ يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ “And if Allah were to impose blame on the people ... ... for their wrongdoing, مَا تَرَكَ عَلَيْهَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ He would not have left upon the earth any person.” If all who do sinful acts, Allah punishes them at once, If to all who violate Allah’s rules Allah’s sentence applies immediately, none would have been left upon the earth. “But He defers them for a specified term.” “And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].” Allah SWT also said, Allah SWT said: “He is Allah SWT, رَبُّكَ, الْغَفُورُ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ He is Allah SWT the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.” “If He were to impose blame upon them, He would have hastened for them the punishment.” “Rather, for them is an appointment.” This shows the characters Al Hilm of Allah SWT. Meanwhile, His servants do sinful acts. Meanwhile, His servants are disbelievers. Meanwhile, His servants associate Allah SWT to others. Allah SWT continues granting them with His mercy. Allah SWT continues granting them sustenance. Allah SWT continues granting them health. Who knows, one day, they will be aware. Look at Pharaoh. He disobeyed verily to Allah SWT, and even proclaimed himself as god. Allah sent him the Prophets Moses and Aaron. اذْهَبَا إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَى “Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, O Moses and Aaron.” “Indeed, he has transgressed.” فَقُولَا لَهُ قَوْلًا لَيِّنًا “And speak to him with gentle speech.” لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَى “Perhaps he may come to realize.” “Perhaps he may be reminded.” “Perhaps he may fear Allah SWT.” Pharaoh was very mean, but Allah SWT return to him with kindness. But when the time comes that Allah SWT considers ... ... there is no use to defer blames upon His servants, Allah will sent them punishment accordingly. This is Al Halim. Many of His servants saying that Allah SWT is ... a matter that has a child. The Apostle ﷺ said: لاَ أَحَدَ أَصْبَرُ عَلَى أَذًى يَسْمَعُهُ مِنَ اللهِ “There is none to show more patience ... ... at listening to the most irksome things ... ... than Allah SWT.” Allah is the Most Patient. إِنَّهُ يُشْرَكُ بِهِ “Partnership is associated to Him (polytheism).” وَيُجْعَلُ لَهُ الْوَلَدُ “And (fatherhood) of a child is attributed to Him.” ثُمَّ هُوَ يُعَافِيهِمْ وَيَرْزُقُهُمْ “But in spite of this He protects them (people).” “And Allah provides them sustenance.” So that they will have time. So that they can contemplate. Who knows? They might come to realize and return to Allah SWT. Hence, when one does a sinful act, he shall remember that his Lord is Al-Halim. The One who defers His sentence. Allah SWT can apply His sentence at any time. But Allah is the Most Merciful. Allah wants us to return to Him. So that we come to realize and worry. If suddenly ... ... Allah applies His sentence and punishment to us. As Allah SWT is Al Halim, Allah SWT likes it when His servants are also Halim. Thus, Allah SWT praises some of His servants ... ... who are Al Hilm. Such as the Apostle Abraham AS. Allah SWT said in two verses: إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّاهٌ مُنِيبٌ “Verily, Abraham is hilm.” In another verse: إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَأَوَّاهٌ حَلِيمٌ “Verily, Abraham is hilm.” See how forgiving the Apostle Ibrahim AS was. Even though he was being annoyed, tested. He never asked Allah to punish his people. All people in the country was hostile to him. They captured him, took off his clothes. A big fire was lit on. It is told that at that time, No fire was ever lit on as big as the one to burn the Apostle Abraham AS. He was thrown into the fire. But he never invoked Allah, “O Allah, destroy them.” The Apostle Abraham AS was chased away by his father who was hostile to him. لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ لَأَرْجُمَنَّكَ وَاهْجُرْنِي مَلِيًّا “O Abraham, if you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time.” What did Abraham say to his father? قَالَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي "Peace will be upon you, O Father.” “I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord.” That was Abraham AS. Afterward, he was chased away from Babil, Iraq. He went to Syam. In Syam, he met people who worshiped celestial objects. They worshiped the Sun. They worshiped the Moon. They worshiped the stars. They were hostile to him and he was insulted. The Apostle Abraham did not ask Allah to destroy them. That was Abraham AS. The same thing when he had a family problem. When he married his second wife. Hajar. Sarah was jealous that she wanted to hurt Hajar. The scholars said, among them Ibnu Hajar RA, The Apostle Abraham AS was not angry to Sarah. The Apostle Abraham AS was not mad to Sarah who wanted to hurt his second wife. The Apostle Abraham preferred to succumb and took his second wife to Mecca. So that the situation would calm down between the two wives. The Apostle Abraham AS did these because he was Al Halim. Ibnu Abi Hatim reported in his narration, from Ibnu Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), If there was any one who hurt the Apostle Abraham when he preached, He would say هداك الله “May Allah guide you.” He did not reply with dirty words. He did not avenge them by asking Allah bad things for them. That was Abraham Al Hilm. While, if he wished to do so, he could have supplicated Allah SWT. Allah could have destroyed at that instant. Since Allah SWT is Al Hilm, Allah likes His servants who are also hilm. Allah is able to punish, but He does not. Allah grants them time for them to come to realize and return to Him. Then mankind shall do the same. Do not get emotional. Because being emotional, easily provoked, easily offended, are bad characters. A good character is being hilm. And when one knows that Allah SWT is Al Hilm, he shall have that character for Allah SWT. Hopefully, Allah SWT is also Hilm to him. As one would say, الجزاء من جنس العمل “We earn what we give.” If we do good to others, but they hurt us, we shall be patient. We do not immediately avenge. We let them, perhaps they would understand. Then Allah SWT would do the same to us. We do many sinful acts. Allah SWT grants us time. He does not take our soul while doing a sinful act. Allah does not make us su’ul khatimah. We can still breath despite our sinful acts. Allah still takes us to meet the holy month, Ramadan. This shows the characters Al Hilm of Allah SWT. Then we shall be hilm to others. Then Allah SWT would do the same to us. In a hadith, it is narrated, that there was one ... ... in shahih Muslim. From Abu Hurairah RA, أَنَّ رَجُلًا There was a man saying to the Messenger of Allah يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ لِي قَرَابَةً “O 'Messenger of Allah! I have relatives ...” أَصِلُهُمْ وَيَقْطَعُونِي “... with whom I maintain ties while they cut me off.” وَأُحْسِنُ إِلَيْهِمْ وَيُسِيئُونَ إِلَيَّ “I am good to them while they are bad to me.” وَأَحْلُمُ عَنْهُمْ “I am forbearing towards them.” “I am patient to them.” “I do not avenge them.” “I do not avenge their badness.” “Their insults, their foolishness.” وَيَجْهَلُونَ عَلَيَّ “They behave foolishly towards me.” What did the Apostle ﷺ say? لَئِنْ كُنْتَ كَمَا قُلْتَ "If things are as you said,” فَكَأَنَّمَا تُسِفُّهُمُ الْمَلَّ “It is as if you were putting hot ashes on them.” وَلَا يَزَالُ مَعَكَ مِنَ اللهِ ظَهِيرٌ مَا دُمْتَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ “Allah will provide you support.” "As long as you continue being hilm to them.” You will not lack a supporter against them from Allah as long as you continue to do that We hope that Allah SWT grants us with noble characters. We hope that Allah SWT makes us, His servants, Who can really love Allah SWT, so that Allah loves us too.
