He is Allah The Provider. Allah provides sustenances to all His creatures. وَكَأَيِّن مِّن دَابَّةٍ لَّا تَحْمِلُ رِزْقَهَا اللَّهُ يَرْزُقُهَا وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ “And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision.” “Allah provides for it and for you.” وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا “And there is no creature on earth ... ... but that upon Allah is its provision.” If animals are guaranteed for them their sustenances by Allah SWT ... ... while they are not mukhalaf [the leader], humans would be even more. Certainly, their sustenance is guaranteed by Allah SWT. However, although Allah guarantees our sustenance ... ... as Allah has decided about our death ... ... we still have to try to look for it ... ... just like we try to keep our life continue. One can look for his sustenance by worldly means ... ... and by religious means. There are worldly causes to earn our living. Like by being an employee, a doctor, a merchant. By farming, and others. Many people know these worldly means. But,there are religious deeds that Allah teaches us to earn a living. And many people ignore it. While, it is possible that these means are stronger to obtain our sustenance. This primary means ... ... Is to supplicate Allah SWT. Allah said: فَابْتَغُوا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الرِّزْقَ “So seek from Allah provision.” A supplication is silahul mukmin, a believer’s weapon. It is not our last weapon, but it is our main weapon. Many uses prayer as their last weapon. And that is a mistake. Al Imam Syafi,i rahimahullahu said about the miracle of supplication. Do you think that a supplication is nothing? You know not what a supplication can do. Many people, after they supplicate Allah, Allah opens His gates toward sustenance. The second cause of obtaining sustenance is by having fear of Allah SWT. Allah SWT said: وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ “And whoever fears Allah ... ... Allah will gave him a way out.” “And Allah will provide for him from where he does not expect.” Indeed, sustenance from where one does not expect. He never thought of it. He never planned it. It comes just like that, effortless and no fatigue. That is sustenance from where one does not expect. How? He fears Allah SWT. He performs Allah’s obligations, keeps himself away from His prohibitions. And some scholars say, if a person obtains sustenance ... ... from a place he never expected ... ... Know that it is a sign that he fears Allah SWT. The next cause is to rely upon Allah SWT. Allah said: وَمَنۡ يَّتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اللّٰه فَهُوَ حَسۡبُهٗ “And whoever relies upon Allah ... .. then He is sufficient for him.” “Allah will accomplish His purpose.” The Apostle ﷺ said: لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ تَتَوَكَّلُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ “If you all depend on Allah with due reliance ... لَرَزَقَكُمْ كَمَا يَرْزُقُ الطَّيْرَ ... He would certainly give you provision ... ... as He gives it to birds.” تَغْدُو خِمَاصاً وَتَرُوحُ بِطَاناً “This birds forth hungry in the morning.” “And they return with full belly at dusk". It is now up to us to improve the way we rely on Allah SWT. Today, many people do not rely upon Allah ... ... to earn sustenance. He relies on his boss, his director, his job. As if, if he does not work at the company ... ... no sustenance will come to him. As if, if his boss, his director do not pay him ... ... he will obtain nothing. That is a mistake. We have to rely only upon Allah. Director and job are only a means. The one who determines our sustenance is Allah SWT. Many people are sacked from their job. They are terminated from their work. And Allah opens other doors for him. If Allah closes one door of sustenance ... ... Allah can open other doors for His servant ... ... If he relies upon Allah SWT. Ibn Rajab Al-Hambali explains in his book ... “If a person relies upon Allah when he looks for sustenance ... ... he relies solely upon Allah and he puts his efforts .. ... he tries ... ... and Allah will make his sustenance easy. ... If he relies solely upon Allah SWT. Thus, put year heart to Allah. He is Allah the Provider. Not a human, neither a boss, nor a director. Next, among causes to earn a living ... ... is to ask your wives and children to pray. Allah SWT said: وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَاصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا ۖ لَا نَسْأَلُكَ رِزْقًا ۖ نَحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ “And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people].” “And be steadfast therein.” Be patient when you ask them to pray. لَا نَسْأَلُكَ رِزْقًا “We ask you not for provision.” نَحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ We provide for you. The scholars said about this verse. “Whosoever continues his night prayer ... ... And asks his wife and children to pray ... ... Allah SWT will make sustenance easy for him to obtain. Many people are busy earning for a living. Days and nights, and they forget to remind their children. They forget to remind their wives to pray. Meanwhile, the gates toward sustenance is by asking their wives to pray. And we shall be patient when we ask them to pray. Next, among the gates toward sustenance ... ... is to maintain relations. This is one of the greatest gates toward sustenance from Allah SWT. The Apostle ﷺ said: مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يُبْسَطَ لَهُ فِي رِزْقِه أَوْ يُنْسَأَ لَهُ فِي أَثَرِهِ فَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ “Anyone who wants to have his provision expanded ... ... and his term of life lengthened ... ... should maintain ties of kinship.” This is indeed a great cause. If a person maintains ties of kinship ... ... with his relatives, does good to his parents, please them .. ... offering gifts to his aunties, uncles ... ... give attention to his siblings ... ... spare a little of his wealth for his siblings ... ... then Allah will open for them the ways to have provisions. It then depends on our faith to Allah about this hadits or not. The Apostle ﷺ said: “Anyone who wants to have his provision expanded ... ... should maintain ties of kinship.” Next, one of the greatest ways to expand our provision ... ... is by doing charity sincerely because of Allah SWT. وَمَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ “Whatever thing you spend [in His cause] ... ... He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers." The Apostle ﷺ said: مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ "Charity does not decrease provision.” Charity does not decrease property. Materially, when one has a million, and donate Rp100.000,- ... ... his money becomes Rp900.000,- But the Apostle said, it will not decrease. How so? That is Allah’s business. Have faith that our property will not decrease. Allah will return our property ... ... in the world, plus the reward that Allah gives in the hereafter. And Allah mentions ... As if the person is giving a loan to Allah. Allah said: “And lend Allah a goodly loan.” مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً “Whosoever would lend Allah a goodly loan ... ... He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward.” When Allah said that a charity is like a loan ... ... that means Allah guarantees that He will return it. When a rich man asks for a loan to us ... ... we won't have a doubt to give him a loan. Because we know that he has many assets. He will return the loan. It would be even more when the one asking us is the One who is the Rich. Allah guarantees to return the charity. He will replace the loan. And it is not only that. Allah will give the interest. Allah will return many times more. To replace the loan we give to Allah SWT. Thus, among things that can increase one’s provision ... ... is by giving charity, but sincerely because of Allah SWT. أقول قولي هذا واستغفر الله لي ولكم ولسائر المسلمين من كل ذنب وخطيئة فأستغفره إنه هو الغفور الرحيم الحمد لله على إحسانه، والشكر له على توفيقه وامتنانه وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له تعظيما لشأنه وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله الداعي إلى رضوانه أللهم صلي عليه وعل أله وأصحابه وإخوانه My fellow Muslims of Friday prayer, may Allah SWT bless you. When a man search for provision ... ... when he supplicates Allah SWT ... ... one shall think good of Allah. He shall think good of Allah SWT. In a hadith Qudsi, Allah said: أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي فليظن بي ما يشاء “I am to my slave as he thinks of Me.” “He shall think of Me however he wants to think.” إِنْ ظَنَّ خَيْرًا فَلَهُ “If he thinks good of Me then he will have it.” وَإِنْ ظَنَّ شَرًّا فَلَهُ "If he thinks evil of Me then he will have it.” He shall think good of Allah, because He is Ar Razaq. He is Allah The Provider. Remember when we are still in our mother’s womb. We were still a fetus. We could not do anything. Allah provided for us. When we were born, we were helpless, we could not talk. We could not work. Allah provided for us. Allah continues to provide for us. And when we grow up, being adult, able to think ... ... we have skill to earn a living ... Do we still think bad of Allah SWT? Remember how much sustenance Allah gives us without us asking Him. Without us asking Him, Allah provides for us. And it would be even more when we ask Allah. Therefore, Prophet Moses AS ... ... When he was sent to go to the Pharaoh, he supplicated Allah. His supplication is famous. رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي وَ اجۡعَلۡ لِّیۡ وَزِیۡرًا مِّنۡ اهلِی etcetera. “My Lord, expand for me my chest [with assurance].” “And ease for me my task.” “And untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech.” This was his supplication. And what did Allah say? قَالَ قَدۡ اُوۡتِيۡتَ سُؤۡلَـكَ يٰمُوۡسٰى‏ “You had been granted your request, O Moses.” And Allah said: وَلَـقَدۡ مَنَـنَّا عَلَيۡكَ مَرَّةً اُخۡرٰٓىۙ‏ “And We had already conferred favor upon you another time.” اِذۡ اَوۡحَيۡنَاۤ اِلٰٓى اُمِّكَ مَا يُوۡحٰٓى “When you were little.” “When you were just born.” “When the troop of Pharaoh wanted to kill you.” Allah saved Prophet Moses. When he was small and was not able to ask for any thing. Allah granted favor to him. Let us try to contemplate. There are so many favors that Allah has given us without us asking Him. Allah loves us. Then if we ask Allah a thing, He won’t give it to us? Thus, we shall think good of Allah SWT. Do not think evil of Allah. The Apostle ﷺ said in a Qudsi hadits: إِنْ ظَنَّ خَيْرًا فَلَهُ “And whoever thinks good of Allah ... ... then he will have it.” وَإِنْ ظَنَّ شَرًّا فَلَهُ “And whoever thinks evil of Allah ... ... he will have it. The last thing we shall remember is that wealth is not the barometer. It is not wealth that is the barometer. What we shall pay attention is the blessing of our wealth. Many people has only a little. He tries to earn a living honestly. He tries to look for lawful means. But he cannot earn much. But Allah blesses his property. He only has a few, but he can use it to worship Allah. He still can pay respect to his parents. He still maintains relationship. Many people has many properties. Earned with all the means he can get. Unlawful ways. Wealthy, but not blessed. He spends his wealth for having fun. He experiences a lot of misfortunes. Household problems, etc. His wealth is not blessed. Thus, one shall put an effort to earn a living honestly. And it would be even more beautiful if one is wealthy ... And he uses what he has, in Allah's way. Then his wealth is even more blessed. And he will be even more shaded on the Day of Resurrection. The Apostle ﷺ said about the Land of Assembly ... ... when the sun is only a mile away. The Apostle ﷺ said: كُلُّ امْرِئٍ فِيْ ظِلِّ صَدَقَتِهِ يَوْمٌ القيامه “Everybody will be shaded by his Sadaqah on the Day of Judgment.” The more he gives on charity ... ... the larger his shade is.
