I'm not really sure I could say I'd like
running so why on earth did Betsy power
Sinclair want to run the Boston Marathon
I really in many ways saw this as a
challenge for others as well as myself I
felt that a lot of people weren't sure I
was going to be able to do it severely
overweight Betsy had to prove she was up
for the challenge I received a call from
Nova saying you know we're really
concerned about your weight do you
really want to come in and put yourself
through these tests and I was still
fighting and said absolutely
Nova's runners had to pass a medical
screening and take a treadmill test to
measure their cardiovascular health but
just minutes into Betsy's tests there
was a problem you had a couple of extra
beats in your heart
I was shocked because I felt absolutely
fine and when the physicians decided
they needed to stop the testing I
thought for sure I was out well see it's
never over till it's over I guess
after more medical tests there was good
news it was determined that it was
artifact so I started with the group
three weeks late and didn't miss a run
after that years earlier after major
surgery and filing for a divorce
Betsy's life had gone into a tailspin I
had gained 70 pounds over the past
approximately three years and I knew I
needed something this drastic to kind of
come through that but training for the
marathon wasn't going to be easy morning
so in the beginning I don't even think I
was in the pack I was you know beyond
the back of the pack you know I held the
last spot today an hour and my first run
everybody has to start somewhere
Betsy began to improve dramatically six
months into training she had lost 35
pounds and had become the fastest female
runner in the group Betsy was doing well
in the final months of training but in
the weeks leading up to marathon day
with a huge storm in the forecast she
couldn't shake the nervousness a few
weeks before the marathon I wasn't
sleeping I didn't get eight hours of
sleep for weeks just really anxious
about it and of course the weather
reports the week before were stressful
and that night I was up at 2:30 after a
sleepless night things got worse I woke
up in the morning not feeling well and
but this is a problem on the way to the
starting line Betsy realized she was
suffering from a urinary tract infection
we're gonna go for it
would you make it through all 26 miles
