so you want to start a science Cafe
great but who do you need to help you
and what makes a good speaker and who's
coming to this thing
anyway it's all right we're here to
help although science cafes can come in
all shapes and sizes there are a few key
roles that every science Cafe should
have first the cafe
coordinator the cafe coordinator handles
all the event Logistics managing
everything from making flyers to booking
the venue to finding a speaker and
moderator next the moderator what a
handsome
fella moderator is responsible for
managing the discussion during the cafe
and getting as many people involved as
possible a moderator should introduce
and conclude the event keep track of
time and keep the conversation

accessible the reason that we're both
involved is because we both really enjoy
doing it um you definitely don't need to
have two people organizing a cafe um we
actually sort of switch off months so
one month I'll be the coordinator and
the moderator and one month Graham will
do those jobs and so we still help each
other at the cafes with the audio stuff
and um making sure that things are
handed out to the audience but you
definitely don't me two people to do it
the
speaker speakers are scientists or
experts Who present material during the
cafe in order to start the conversation
they set the overall tone and direction
of the
discussion and finally the
audience understanding your audience is
the key to making your Cafe a
success try building a target audience
based on age familiarity with science
location and other
interests there are cafes throughout the
country that um are strictly for college
students to get them meeting with
scientists and networking or with high
school students to get them an idea of
what they could possibly study in
college so um you know it it really
depends on on what kind of audience
you're going for the great thing about a
science Cafe is that it's welcome to all
people of different understandings of of
science if you want to make it a more
