so after weeks of preparation it's
finally here the day that you hold your
science cafe the day that you step up to
the plate and take on all challengers
the day that you go big or go home the
day that you become the person you are
destined to become that day right okay
deep breaths let's just run through what
you can expect the day of the cafe first
arrive early try getting there 45
minutes to an hour beforehand to start
setting up this should include setting
up the sign-in table for the mailing
list making sure the a/v equipment is
working and queued up properly and
checking in with the speaker to run
through the event and answer any of his
or her questions as people start to
arrive and settle in do something fun to
get them to participate like a trivia
contest make sure everyone is signing in
and you're ready to go if you're the
moderator welcome everyone officially
whoa hey welcome to catfish a Boston
everyone if they haven't already
encouraged them to support the venue by
getting food and drinks and tipping well
next explain the cafe format emphasizing
audience participation it's a good idea
to introduce the topic in the speaker
with an interesting fact for some fun
personal information if you have a video
clip to play play it now subject tonight
is all about physics and the first thing
we're going to show you is a clip from
an ova series fabric of the cosmos after
introductions your speaker takes a stage
remember keep it casual the talk to just
be a conversation starter the speaker
should include a couple open-ended
questions to help lead into the group
discussion once the speaker finishes
audience members can start asking
questions have the moderator keep the
discussion lively and clear for
particularly good questions try have any
audience answer or pull the audience by
a show of hands if all goes well
conversation should take on a life of
its own the most interesting
conversations take place after the
discussion allow for a good amount of
time for the audience to mingle and meet
the speaker one-on-one the mingling
after the cafe keeps the conversation
going and those people that perhaps were
a little shy about asking that question
during the question-and-answer session
they now have the opportunity to go
right up to the speaker
11 and it's great sometimes you know
that mingling session goes on for
another 30 minutes to 45 minutes and
there's a crowd of people around the
speaker who just have a lot more they
want to ask and learn from this is also
a great time to make announcements about
upcoming science cafes or to give away
some amazing door prizes prizes a nova
sciencenow hat it fits very well and the
copies of fabric consoles book what a
lucky guy formerly thank the speaker
location as well as the audience for
coming and you're wrapped thank you very
much
